Stock Subwoofers

Where would you buy replacement stock subwoofers that came in the firebird? Found a set at the junkyard I was thinking of converting over to but I'm sure the speakers are probably fried by now.

Re: Stock Subwoofers

I think so, it was the performance sound option, doesn't have the Delco Bose emblems on it though. On an 88 bird

Re: Stock Subwoofers

I guess you're talking about the UQ7 option which added a small subwoofer on an enclosures mounted in place of each rear speaker, next to a small 4"x6" speaker.
They were powered by a very small amplifier located in the dashboard behind the map pouch. Remove the passenger side panel below the map pouche and you should see it on the left.

Finding stock replacement will be very hard and pretty much pointless, I'd try to find new good quality 5" subwoofer instead and make sure they're compatible with your radio (not too powerful and the right Ohms).

Re: Stock Subwoofers

here is a link to more info on this system. The one I sold - the buyer said it worked awesome. So the speakers might still be good but with amp and headunit you will have to bypass the amp.

Re: Stock Subwoofers

You can always have them rebuilt, like I did,but then again I'm keeping my car as original as possible.

Re: Stock Subwoofers

The Performance Sound or UQ7 option is not a Bose. It is a Delco. I just rebuilt the one in my 86, and it does sound pretty decent for an 80's system. Ian Kee at <KeeAudio.com> Atlanta GA installed some custom built subs in my OE speaker/sub boxes. I removed the boxes and shipped them to him. He also set me up with some great 4x6 plates (speakers) for the front and rear. Ian installed 2 Ohm subs in place of the 4 Ohm units that came OE, and the 2 Ohm units have more volume than the OE subs had. You will not find bolt in replacement subs, but the custom units are not expensive and they look original, only with up to date materials and aftermarket quality. One cannot compare it to a 2012 premium aftermarket install, however it sounds pretty good. My car is a low mileage all original that lives for the shows and shows in the stock class, so OE was my main concern. Get in touch with Ian and tell him what you have and what you want to do with it, and he will set you up with a decent system. Other things to consider are your amplifier. Is it working? Many times the subs are blown, and sometimes the little 20 watt Delco amp has turned into a turd also. The amp was used in the Firebird and the Fiero, so an amp from either car will work. I bought two. One was bad and the other was good, so it is sort of a crap shoot to find a working one. Sellers rarely have the ability to test an amp before selling it, so adjust the price you are willing to pay for one. As it turned out my subs were shot but the original amp was working. And no, I am not willing to sell the one spare amp. M&R Radio repair will rebuild a non-working core if you send it to them. Good luck, and let us know how it works out.
