15" Stroker in a 1987 Trans Am

15" Stroker in a 1987 Trans Am

Hey gang,

I’ll get right to the point. I’m an old school cerwin vega guy. I’ve had a old school Stroker in my closet for a few years and got it recoiled recently. Its factory fresh and due to some opertunities, I’m getting my old 1987 Trans am back on the road. Been brain storming about if I want to go thru the trouble of putting it in the car. Its heavy.

I got a new Hifonics amp from sonic electronics and since the Stroker is a dual 4 ohm VC, I should get a 2 ohm load from the amp which will be about 1700 watts RMS. Is that enough for this thing?

Secondly, I found a prefab’d sub box from the 3rd gen platform on ebay. It houses 2 15s and since I’ve only got one, and since Strokers need a ton of air space – thinking about just cutting a new board and making the box only house one 15”. That way I can make a port for the other side. This way the 15” sub can benefit of having the whole box all to its self.

Problem is what kind of port can I pull off? What size? I can find specs on the Stroker online I’m sure, and It just one of those ebay f body boxes – I can locate the specs on that too. At work right now so a lot of the internet is blocked. Will a round port work? Every decent Stroker built box has these rectangle ports so I’m not sure if I can pull that off.

shape of port doesn't matter. as long as you correctly tune port length and box size to the sub, it'll sound good. figuring box size is a bit tricky for these cars (since they are such weird shapes), but not impossible. also remember that the space inside the actual port doesn't count as box volume, common mistake

poke around with google, theres lots of port calculators out there.. Just remember like he said, the port dosent count on box volume!

Thanks fellas. Its interesting, I've always seen huge mega "slots" for ports on these big Cerwin Vega Stroker set ups. A 15" stroker calls for something like 3-4 cubes of airspace. I have an aero port that will need to be trimmed. Its too long and I belive with about 3.6 cubes called for an 8" port (its 4" wide) for about a 32hz tunning. I'll go for the box and retop it to accomodate my project.
