Suggestions Wanted

After 14 years of owning my Iroc,I'm finally getting around to ditching the factory "ERS" cassete player and speakers.
My car is not driven on a regular basis,It's a drag oriented car with the battery and a NOS bottle in the rear well.I'm not looking for a competition system or an audiophiles delight,I just want to put in a quality head unit and speakers.I'd like to avoid an external amp,as that's just more weight to haul around. What I'm looking for are suggestions on a CD/MP3 in dash, and quality speakers. The only hitch is that w/ a 468 under the hood and dual Flowmasters,it's gotta produce some volume to be heard. It doesn't need to be insanely loud, just so I can hear it and not distort all to hell.I know the factory speakers are 4x6s and 6x9s,if something else will work better,I have no problem fabricating plates if need be,or enlarging openings, etc.

So let me have it,what should I buy?

Dollar for dollar you can't beat a Pioneer. If you don't what to run amps check out the DEH-P80. It will give you more power from the HU.

hey now.. i have a sony and i love it it has worked great for me. granted it is the top of the line deck from sony but it is very very nice. i havent used any other sony equipment besides a 1200 watt amp and i was pretty pleased with that too no problems for me. it was also the high model amp though.

generally, if you are not going to run an amp, the stock speakers are fine. Running good speakers on just a headunit will clip the speakers.

Well all i knwo is i bought a brand new Alpine HU, and new type e speakers and they sounded real clear until about 19, then they sounded like crap. When i tested the HU out with the stock speakers it sounded better than with new speakers after 20. These are my personal observations. Could have screwed up the wiring. But i doubt it.

you know what i dont know but it was an alpine cda???, ill get to it tonight, but i was using the speaker wire they sent along with it form Alpine. I would assume new 18 gauge wire form alpine going 3 feet would be good enough.

Speaker wiring isn't that important. The stock wiring is more then enough. This isn't high current DC.

You also wasted money of '40 farads'. I've seen more then one monkey get MECP, if you can read you can pass that. If you're so smart, how come you can figure out how to turn off the caps lock? But I bet you're one of those guys that can hear the difference in RCA cables too.
Can you actually explain why you think "FACTORY SPEAKER WIRE SUCKES"? Should be SUCKS.

You may have already made your purchases, but regarding the headunit, I also went for Pioneer. One of the reason (besides I like them) was the 1 1/2 din size models they offer. They look soooo much more cleaner than a regular single din size deck. They don't stick out, you don't need an ugly installation kit to make it fit and fill in the gaps, and the display and buttons are nice and large so it's easy to operate and read. Here's mine . . .

Since I bought mine, they look even better now, and come with more features. They are now available in black which would be a perfect match for the black interior trim.
