38 Mile 89 IROC for Sale

Hey Everyone,

As many of you know, I have been searching for another low mile car to add to the collection. This one came up in my search, it's not my car, just decided to post for the owner because he's a super nice guy and was very honest over the phone about it, and the car is so unusual.... so I hope of you guys ends up with it... I decided to pass because between travelling to CA to see it, getting it back to MA, repainting it, getting correct wheels, etc I'd invest too much into it, but it's a real 00038 mile car, right color combo, 350 too. Yep, it has an interesting history, the wheels are wrong, and it has some dents and needs some paint work, but the current owner knows the whole story and it's priced right... if this was local to me i'd be all over it.

Wow only 38 miles, that's crazy. It's only 20 minutes from my place in CA too. If only I had that kind of money laying around. Nice Find!

Re: 38 Mile 89 IROC for Sale

Has the wrong wheels on it for an 89. Those are the early IROC rims and those are not small dents. My guess is the car probably has a salvage title for some reason.

Something fishy, 38 miles with that much body damage?

The car was in an impound lot for a while where it got dents and the wheels and tires stolen... the seller was very honest about it and knows the whole story. you can still see the plastic on the radio and ERS emblem, pretty neat.

I'm going to have to say it's suspicious too. After the price the 4.3 mile '85 pulled, I don't see someone asking half that.

The car was taken on a test drive when new, stolen, and stored in a garage untouched and mint until about 5 yrs ago, then the guy died and it was impounded

Sure! Long story short, it was my brothers car for years now. We found the best original one we could back in 2006, he wanted an all rust-free original paint car with no stories.... Tough to find in a Malibu, almost all were driven and rotted over the years.

He never had any interest in selling it, but I bought it from him about a year ago as he needed additional $$ to buy a house without paying PMI. It currently has 63k miles on it and is all original except for the drivetrain, it has a GMPP crate 350, everything is new. I love the car and planned to keep it for him, but would rather have another low mile thirdgen, so it's currently for sale. If anyone out there would like to take it in on partial trade towards a mint sub-20k mile original paint thirdgen, let me know

Re: 38 Mile 89 IROC for Sale

Nice!

I've been looking for a factory 4 speed Malibu, off and on, for a while. Almost all the 4 speed cars have been pretty well butchered up by hillbilly hotrodders. The one week I stayed off of ebay, an all original, 68K mile, 4 speed, station wagon, which was parked in a barn in the mid-'80's, came up. Just missed it.

No kidding! 4-speed wagons are definitely unusual! Yes, they are mostly all cut-up by now. I'll keep my eyes peeled for you. Years back, I found one with a factory 267 4-speed with under 20k miles. Car was gorgeous, but the guy wouldn't take any less than $20k for it... yikes...

A friend of mine owns this, a short $$ 8.1L BB doug nash 5-speed olds (Malibu style) wagon that he has tons of fun with

Re: 38 Mile 89 IROC for Sale

I met with this guy today, I'm more than likely buying it tomorrow. I have copies of the paperwork for the history, clean title, already smogged, registered. It fired right up, idled for a good 30 minutes. Body damage from the guy who bought it from police impound. Needs minor things, I'm all over it. I'll let you know the details tomorrow. The only thing that bothered me was some spots under the hood up in some corners, paint didn't cover, factory flaw? Is it normal? Other than that, car could be buffed out and driven for now. Or not.

We're putting it on a lift tomorrow and going for a short test drive. I may have a 40 mile 89 iroc heading to my house on a flatbed. Interior is brand new, amazing. I was suspicious too, but after spending an hour talking with this guy, I feel pretty confident about our deal.

Do you know if the paint in the engine compartment is a little shabby from the factory? I heard it was normal but I'm not sure. Hopefully I'll be filling in my car profile tomorrow, I'm new at this, but think I finally found one.

Post a pic of the area so we can see it. The engine compartment didn't get any clear over the color coat.

Re: 38 Mile 89 IROC for Sale

What's up guys, I bought the 38 mile Camaro today, it's in my garage. We put it on a lift today, all tags and labels are all still on and clean. Catalytic converter hasn't burned the sticker off yet! Tags on all the springs, rear end, it was pretty cool to see. There's some surface rust on some metal pieces, easily cleaned up. The jackasses that dragged it around the storage yard put a couple small dents in it,broke a couple cheap plastic pieces under the front section, but it's a pretty awesome car, interior is showroom condition. The paperwork tells the story, saw the clean California Title today that showed 34 actual miles. I'm trying to figure out this picture thing to post some cool pictures. I got it for 10k, total. He took care of tax, title, registration. Tell me the truth guys, how'd I do for a newbie?

What's up everyone, I need the best place to find a set of 89, 16" iroc wheels, found some with scratches and things, but I want them like new. Not sure of the best place to find the parts I need, rims, armrests, fog light button, original muffler (some idiot hit the muffler off with a hammer). Ready to get started. Also, can someone tell me the color of the badges on the metallic blue with silver and black stripes? This is all new to me, trying to figure it all out.

Most of those items are no problem. Look here, ebay, http://www.moderndaymuscle.com, etc.

The wheels are easy to find. But for your car you'll want them as new. You're probably better off finding a set and having them refinished.

Now, for the muffler/tail pipe assembly. That's going to be a tough one. I saw a new OEM muffler/tail assembly on ebay 5 or 6 years ago and it wasn't cheap. That's the last one I ever saw. I needed one for my '85. Some pinhead cut it off to change the fuel pump, I suspect, and replaced it with a generic replacement before I bought it. I searched all over the country and finally found someone in Georgia who had one left over from a parted '88 IROC. It was covered in surface rust and paint, and I spent two weeks refinishing it before I installed it.

Do you still have the factory muffler. If you do, I'd try to repair it

Re: 38 Mile 89 IROC for Sale

I thought that muffler may be an issue. I haven't even taken it off yet, haven't had the time. Like you say, there are wheels everywhere, just a little thrashed. I'll check the other sites. The armrests came unglued from the door, but are perfect shape, think I can save them or just replace? The rest I think I've got a handle on. Now just gotta make some time, pretty excited. Bringing my youngest to start college this weekend and then, empty nest= spare time.

All of the '88 and up arm rests "pop". You have to remove them and reglue them. There is a tutorial on it somewhere here.

Heres more pics of my 89 IROC, now with 44 miles: Only three pictures at a time, sticker still on the rear end, sticker still on the cat.

Congratulations! That's almost a steal!

After you get it back to "new" condition, what are your plans for it?

That's the million dollar question. I'm not in a position at the moment with 2 kids in college to have a collection, just enough for 1. I want something I can enjoy, not stare at, ya know? So, we'll see, I'm not sure what to do, I'll fix it up and then worry about it.

I understand where you're at. I'd rather drive a car than have a garage queen. If I were you I'd make it pretty, sell it to someone that has a large garage and no need to put miles on it, buy something that I can drive when and where I want, and put the rest of the cash in the bank. Sounds like a good plan...Good luck!

Enjoy the car You got it for the price of a driver condition car, it was a bargain. Fix it up and put a thousand miles a year on it (or more!). Mine has 10k miles on it, if I drive it a thousand miles a year in 5 years it'll still have very low miles and i'll be able to enjoy it too. Have fun with it!

Re: 38 Mile 89 IROC for Sale

My insurance guy and good friend said he'd give me 15k last night, but I told him I'd sell it to him when I'm done, haha. He has an absolutely awesome 69 Chevelle we're discussing, full custom crate 427, 12k interior, show quality car, so I may have a hell of a partial trade. I'm just taking a step back and figuring it out.

Chazman, the GH3 code, 2.77 gear, there doesn't appear to be many I see, tall gears, are they rare, good, or bad? Any thoughts?

It's the standard 5.7L rear gear. 2.77 also means it's a heavier duty BW 9 bolt rear. (vs 2.73)

Beautiful car! There is a company near us that does wheel refinishing- they are nationwide- I know I posted the link on here for another guy- now I have to remember the name of the place. They do very nice work.

Great car - good luck with it. Even with the few issues it has, it is still as close to new as you can probably get. A little bit of effort and she will be perfect.

Re: 38 Mile 89 IROC for Sale

I had the privilege of meeting Tim and his brand new 89 the other day. Sticking my head into this car was like going back in time to 1990 when I bought my first new camaro. His interior is flawless and still has that "new car" smell. I forgot how nice the 89 black custom cloth interior was. Our cars look like twins right now because he has the earlier wheels on his. It was a pleasure meeting him and getting to see this jewel of a time capsule.

Re: 38 Mile 89 IROC for Sale

and now I see this car listed for auction with Meachum? You made a very good decision to buy and invest in the car and now you should see a hansome payoff. Then buy 2 or 3 fun cars to daily or weekly drive!
Good job and smart- it's beautiful now. Congratulations.....

Re: 38 Mile 89 IROC for Sale

I've had a ball learning more about the third gen and working on this car, now it's time to buy a daily driver, like you said. This car is pretty awesome, but belongs with someone that collects cars, so it can remain a 80's time capsule. My next one, I'm thinking third gen camaro, LS3, Tremec 6 speed? Whatever, it will be a good time. Hopefully my car sells for a good, fair price and I can have some more fun. Thanks for the kind words.
