might of found my shaking problem

So i've had a shaking problem for a long time now at higher speeds and also when i hit the brakes. So i figured the brakes shaking was the rotors so i bought rotors, pads, and bearings to replace it all. Now, i've had the front bearings replaced about 2 years ago and it still shook after that. When i pulled the dust covers off the rotors moved in and out about half an inch. Pulled out the cotter pins and the nut spun on about 2 full turns till it was snug. So i only changed the pads and i'm gonna drive it soon to see if that was the problem. Just another reason why i prefer to do my own work.

Re: might of found my shaking problem

may want to try a roloc pad on both surfaces of the existing rotors first. need to remove the old friction material.

provided your old rotors have no visible grooving or run out.

Re: might of found my shaking problem

The old ones werent grooved and with the wheel off i spun em and didnt see any wobble. Now i did not pull the rotors off and inspect the bearings. Is it possible that with the castle nut being loose that the bearings may be damaged?

your bearings almost certainly need replacement.

Re: might of found my shaking problem

If you have shaking, it probably put extra wear on the bearings and loosened them up. They may have been tight 2 years ago when mechanic did the work

+1.

Since they were installed too loose they have been wearing in an abnormal way for 2 years. ( 2 years would NOT be enough to war out a set of new bearings under 99% of circumstances ) Now that you have 'snugged' these worn-funny bearings back down the shaking / shudder might even be worse than it was.

Vibration problems are always hard to ID - in this case it seems like a safe play to start with some new front bearings !!

Re: might of found my shaking problem

the bearing races are pressed into the rotor. new bearings will come with new races that will likely need to be swapped into your old rotors. if, however, the rotors are suspect it may be more efficient to swap in new rotors while you're there.

most of these front end parts/pieces are pretty inexpensive so it's common to swap in new stuff. I find some of the best prices for most of it at RA.

Re: might of found my shaking problem

Forgot to update, i finally got around to installing the new rotors and bearings, shaking when breaking went away which i expected. Shaking at high speeds still there though, thinking maybe wheel balance or bent rim. Tie rods and centerlink only about a year old and no play in the front end that i could find.
