Car: 1987 Pontiac Firebird formula 350
Engine: sbc 355 tpi
Transmission: 700r4
Axle/Gears: 3.27 posi 9 bolt b/w
At a lose for words.

so im helping my boss restore his 1968 camaro and he did a full disc break conversion (everything is brand new). there is break fluid and no air bubbles out of each caliper but if i press on the break pedal the break pads wont grab the rotors(as if the caliper piston is stuck in place). i can freely spin each rotor. any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.

o an i have another question but its about my 1987 firebird formula. are the disc rotors on the front the same size as the rear disc rotors? could the be interchangeable if need be. (i have no actual intention of doing that) i just bought 4 new front slotted rotors thats why i ask

Bad master cyl or you didnt bench bleed the new one.

And no you can't swap front 2 rear rotors on your 87. Way different.

I believe the front rotors have to be bigger than the rear if I'm not mistaken.

lol

3rd gen are probably one of the few cars with front and rear rotors being the same diameter 10.5 I think. Unless you have pbr rear brakes, then the REAR is bigger than the front lol

Is there a proportioning valve in place? Perhaps it's the wrong one or not adjusted (if adjustable).

The factory didn't seem to agree with you; not that I'm implying they would know anything about brakes, but still...

The 89-92 setup in these cars had 10.5" fronts and 11.8" rears, in the vast majority of the 4-wheel disc ones. The few that had the other system had approx 11.8" both front and rear.

I agree with the bench-bleeding diagnosis. There's air trapped in the MC where it can't get out, because the outlet for the line isn't at the highest point in the cyl. Only way to get rid of it is to bleed the MC while it's level.

we bench bled the MC they all had fluid come out both front an rear. the is a proportion valve attached to the MC but it doesnt look very adjustable . the carmaro is level i have the front an rear lifted on jack stands.

if it helps my firebird has the borg/w rear end 3.27 9 bolt everything but the break pads are OEM. im pretty certin all 4 discs are the same size idk whats size they are either way i have 4 new 10.510" Diameter, 1.030" Thickness rotors.

thanx for the website too ill tell him about it. i my self just figured id try an kill 2 birds with one stone sense both cars are indeed f-bodies and breaks are breaks either way minus a few details of course

Your car may be level, but look at the master cylinder. That thing is always slanted, so you have an ending in which the air gets trapped. And there's no way of getting that out of there unless you, say, lower the front end and raise the rear.

Front rotors on there's cars habd intergral hubs and bearings, not possible to use them on the rear of the car and visa versa

damn you auto correct lol. True the MC is not exactly level so ill definitely give it a try. I'll bleed the MC once the MC is level.

Quoted for emphasis. Stock brake rotors are definitely not interchangeable front to rear.

Its been confirmed front and rear rotors are not interchangeable. fronts have this cone of metal sticking out where as the rears do not its just flat. how they hook up to the axels an what not are way off.
