Re: 2009+ CTS-V brake upgrade
You are correct about the limit of cars on street tires - you can get only so much braking power out of your tires (fronts mostly) and going to some crazy 6 piston 15" kit is not going to make your car stop faster. This is one reason why I advocate those going to 17" or larger wheels run a 275 front tire (or larger) for more braking power - a 245-45-17 tire offers no more braking than a 245-50-16 sized one...
But as John said, on the track, larger kits do offer some advantages in terms of pads and also thermal radiation. But then you have cost and wheel size considerations to accomodate...

John,
Probably a dumb question but
Does II CTS-V calipers have the heat radiators on the pistons to and are they interchangeable in between calipers ? ZR1 to II CTS-V or even Camaro SS Pistons

Man those are some sick brakes i wish i had waited and got the 2nd generation ctsv calipers instead of my c6 z06 calipers i didnt bother reading thru the thread but i was wondering if the ctsv 15 inch rotor would work on a c6 z06 caliper?

if i hadnt already spent to much on my brakes i would of bought your zr1 brake kit unless of course you would want to trade brakes? Lol is there a rotor thats bigger then 14inch that would work on c6 z06 caliper?

I am not aware of an off the shelf rotor that will work. Its quite possible there is a carbon rotor out there that will work. Other than that, not much larger than 14".

D40 is a great camera, especially for beginners.
Outstanding work on the brakes, thanks for sharing with us. Sure beats the "please dont copy" mentality. I look forward to seeing the finished product.

Re: 2009+ CTS-V brake upgrade
It is a nice camera and has been all over the world with me. And can make some fantastic photos in the right hands. I have since upgraded to a D600 with nice results. I am not a gear snob, D40 has treated me well and remains in the family, even though I "outgrew" it years ago.

You know the color code for the blue zr1 Calipers

Re: 2009+ CTS-V brake upgrade
I am not aware of the code. I use Mike the Powdercoater for all my brake stuff and he has a color that many claim is a match for the ZR1 color. I have not seen it in person.

Re: 2009+ CTS-V brake upgrade
Theres MetalCast Blue and MetalSpeck Blue from duplicolor
Metalcast thinking of trying Metalcast Base Coat "Metallic base coat" and then a Metalcast "Translusent blue coat" that goes on top i have seen just the translusent blue over bare metal that gives a anodized look
MetalSpeck Blue has larger flakes with blue paint mix and i would put a Clearcoat on top
I was also going to try MetalSpeck Blue with MetalCast Blue to see how that would compare and the type of color would come out

Re: 2009+ CTS-V brake upgrade
kinda like what you have done.. looks brushed with tinted color powder coat on top.. it creates a unique effect as compared to just unbrushed metal
i was thinking using that in the engine bay

Re: 2009+ CTS-V brake upgrade
i think it would be worth it in the end
Im highly considering it
Trying to find a cheap project wheel to test out and see how it comes out
also a side question
What brake fluid you used have you tried different ones for comparison ? or there all pretty much the same just different advertising

I am currently using ATE Super Blue and Type 200. It is the same fluid except for the color, blue vs yellow. I like this as I switch back and forth and know when all the old fluid is out.
The only functional differences between different fluids should be the temperature at which they boil when dry or wet.

Re: 2009+ CTS-V brake upgrade
What's your thoughts on using fully threaded caliper to bracket bolts vs partially threaded 1 bolts lateral strength wise ..also for bracket to spindle ...I know Oem is fully threaded I believe correct or I'm looking to deep in such minor detail .. Your input would be greatly appreciated on it .

Fully threaded is just fine. Once the bolt is torqued, it acts the same as a clamp. It is merely holding the two parts together. The friction between the two parts is what takes the side or shear load. As long as the bolt is torqued properly, it will not see any side load.

In my opinion it is always wise to sweat the details.

Another small question in regard of upgrading the proportioning valve spring ?
i hear it improves brake feel and improves bias on stock setup and 2 piston front setup.. But havent heard or seen anything on 4 piston and up and the effects of the upgrade.

Can you tell me what the hubs are (shown directly above) on this swap? I am in need of some hubs like that, that will fit the 3rd gen. spindles. I'd love to know what these are in the picture and where they were purchased from, or if they are custom or what.

Re: 2009+ CTS-V brake upgrade
Try a CTS-V spare. No I haven't tried tried to see if it fits in the 3rd gen spare tire area. I didn't carry the spare with the OEM wheels anyway. My spare is a can of fix-a-flat and 200mi AAA.

Those are just turned down OEM rotors. These were used for test fitment. I recommend Kore3 aluminum hubs for actual installations.
