Re: 1LE brake questions
Thanks for the info, thats what i was hoping. I'm assuming that the 1le brakes are lighter then the factory iron ones since the 1le are aluminum.

Re: 1LE brake questions
I would not expect to save any significant amount of weight with the 1le brakes

Re: 1LE brake questions
for ***** an giggles,
1le complete spindle, 12" rotor, calipers, brake hose is 46.14 lbs on my scale.
my Baer 14" 6 piston kit, with long screw in wheel studs and solid bearing spacer is 49.16 lbs
if somebody has the weight of the stock brakes, that would be good.

Re: 1LE brake questions
I did a aluminum hub, 14" 2 piece baer rotor and 06 ZO6 6piston caliper (all 4 corners on my 70 formula)
and I can say that the 14" setup is lighter than the stock 10.5" brakes that were on it.

Re: 1LE brake questions
Don't have a weight but I know the iron calipers weigh a good amount more than the LS1 duals. Even with the carrier bolted on them. Based on that, I would say it might weigh more than even your 14 inch setup.

Re: 1LE brake questions
Your honestly talking a weight savings of 5 pounds one way or the other or something small like that. Dont bother worrying about little things like that. If you really want to save weight throw an LS1 in your car with a t56. THAT will save weight.
As far as our cars being heavy....they are good deal lighter than a 5th gen. Yes they are heavier than a 5.0 but they can handle so oh well haha.

Re: 1LE brake questions
i still think the stock 10.5 brakes weight more that the 1le. i think.
1le and baer s6.. the baer caliper is longer than the 1le rotor....

Re: 1LE brake questions
5lbs unsprung weight is a big diff in feel and the new one the big 3 talk about (moment of inertia)
Also when you do a 1LE conversion you're cutting off some weight from the spindle.

Re: 1LE brake questions
Around 22 kg (48.5 lbs) for the base 10.5" setup and around 18 kg (39.68 lbs) for the 1LE, though these numbers are certainly not the most accurate, given the scale has not been calibrated for ages.

Re: 1LE brake questions
to throw a wrench in this, weight also varies between spindles. the early spindles, up to 88 i think, use a light casting than the later 88 and up spindles. I have both laying around, i can get a weight later.

Re: 1LE brake questions
EDIT. Curious, I double checked AndyZ28's CD (Given the info below, I wouldn't think that a change in weight would be significant):
1982-1989 vs. 1990-1992
"The spindles made for 3rdgen cars from 1982-1989 were essentially identical. Sometime in late 1989 a change was made at the foundry to incorporate several small changes to the spindles. This was done to increase structural integrity (in a very small way) to the existing spindles. Remember that at the same time a change was made to the brake line fitting threads affecting the thread pitch of the combination valve threads.
"The foundry change was a direct result of the advent of 1LE cars, and all of the derivatives. A study of the photos in this section will show the changes were required for the adapter to properly attach to the spindle. I encountered this interference when I did the 1LE upgrade on my 1982 Z28. I used a pair of 1986 spindles, and I could not seem to get the adapter bracket to line up with the upper holes (see problems). The reason was, that the adapter was designed to be used with the later 1990-1992 spindles. Those spindles had been made with an additional amount of metal removed in this area. At the same time metal was added to the area around the bosses that the adapter bracket was to attach to. This can clearly be seen in the photos, below. What I did to overcome this problem was to simply grind away the area of the spindle that was causing the interference. [I don't recall this being an issue when I modified the spindles on my 85] This work very well, and I have done the same thing several times since then. It occurred to me upon examining a set of the later spindles, that the foundry did exactly what I did. Only in reverse, It appears that they took a grinder, and modified the die to fit their needs. This meant removing some metal from the die, to in effect, add metal to the spindle. The thin area at the upper bolt hole has had no detrimental effect on my brakes at all.
"I would not go to all the trouble to hunt down a set of 1990-1992 spindles because they are stronger. The belief that the later spindles are stronger is a myth. But they might be easier to work with. I hope the images are helpful in deciding this for yourself."

I got the whole kit from http://www.flynbye.com/catalog/i55.html I think you should be able to get only the spindles if you request it.
