Bleeding brakes - fluid squirts from reservoir?

Wife's car is a '92 RS. I finished changing the front rotors and pads, and got her to come out to the garage to help bleed the system.

Fluid was mud brown - I don't think anyone's ever flushed it out before (it's the first time I've done her brakes, car doesn't get too many miles on it).

I sucked out all the old fluid with a turkey baster and added new stuff. When she pressed the pedal down, fluid came squirting out of the front tank of the master cylinder and made a mess in the engine bay. Even with a slow press I could see fluid coming out with every press. We had to bleed with the cap on, I've never had to do this on any car.

Sign of a bad master cylinder, or is this just a quirk of the third gens?

Thanks,
Jeff

Agreed, You have to put the cap on before you hit the brakes.

most cars are like that, the spray is normal, the only time you bleed with the cap off is if youre gravity bleeding.....which is a PITA!!

Thanks all. Had to swap in new calipers since one was sticking, otherwise all ok.

Just different to me, never put the cap on on my 4th gen or any friends' cars..

Haha, funny stuff. I did the same thing yesterday. Finally got my upgrade done...and had the girlfriend in front and heard it while trying to do the back right rear.....she asked why fluid was squirting in front, I put the cap on at that point. Everything after bled fine.
