PowerMaster conversion?
I've been considering a PowerMaster (Power Master) conversion of sorts... Is it a simple step by step process like I hope?
Step 1-remove Vacuum assist unit entirely
Step 2-Bolt in PowerMaster...
I know the Rod from the pedal to the master will have to be shorter... and I'll have to get a Stockpile of Accumulators, as they go bad at least once every 3 years, or so...
Is this a dumb idea? I mean, it'll save weight, open the engine bay, and still work incredibly well... Shoot, the Grand Nationals had them... Why can't we?

Re: PowerMaster conversion?
To tell the truth I wouldn't put a PowerMater on any car. They are just too unreliable. Many of the GN owners remove them in favor of vacuum assisted, manual, or hydraboost systems.
Also check what is required for wiring. There are wiring diagrams over on gnttype.org

Re: PowerMaster conversion?
Really? I've heard that PowerMasters were Super reliable and Favorable. I've heard of Guys swapping Vacuum and Hydros out for them in older rods, and Even newer cars, like the Shelbys...
In any case, I think I'd like the reduced clutter... All You have to do to maintain them is Swap the accumulator every so often, or make sure the Switch isn't stuck... And bleed the system, nothing too Labourous, or hard to maintain. Not a whole lot can go wrong.
Thanks for the link, I'll check it out.

Re: PowerMaster conversion?
Seriously, I would not have posted what I did if I did not have good reason. Check some of the Turbo Buick boards about the '86 & '87 GN's and GNX's that have or had a PowerMaster system.
In '89 GM went back to the vacuum booster for the TTA's.

Re: PowerMaster conversion?
If you don't mind some pressure lines HydraBoost is another way to go. It runs from the P/S pump, hence the need for the high pressure lines. It is a compact unit.

Here are some threads with pictures. Note that the install-pictures thread has had the pic's moved to photobucket. There is a link to them in that thread.

Re: PowerMaster conversion?
I have an 1987 GN... with a toasted powermaster in it. I do plan on putting another one if though seeing as the car is 100% stock down to the orginal window sticker
The units usually fail due to lack of maintence... require annual flushing of the brakes... and should probably run DOT 5 Silicone instead of cummy DOT3

Re: PowerMaster conversion?
True that. Ok. I guess if I decide to redo the brakes (Car could use it... Probably never seen brake job in it's 18 yr life...) I'll swap to the Hydroboost, like the vettes have. Thanks guys.
On that note, is there anything I (A novice) should know about a Hydroboost swap real quick? I mean, I'll research before I do the swap, but, are there any secrets?

Re: PowerMaster conversion?
The only item that seems to be an issue is the return line plumbing. The return from the HB unit and the return from the P/S box should enter separate from each into the reservoir.
Some setups have them T'd together, which can cause the HB unit to slightly apply the brakes (they drag a little).
If you can check out an Astro van setup. Has a remote reservoir high on the cowl.
It also sounds like you have a stock brake setup. Should look into upgrading to some larger front rotors and PBR calipers. Even the C4 12" setup is worlds above the stock 10.5" single piston iron caliper brakes.

Re: PowerMaster conversion?
You bet, I've already bought 12" Rotors (Dimpled and Slotted, for what it's worth) from R1Concepts.com, I'm Saving up for new Calipers. (can get pricey...)... Thanks for all the help RBob
