i have one on my car, and as far as i remember the threads were the same. The lines needed to be modified or rebent because they do not line up. You also need the pushrod that goes in the booster and pushes the masters piston.

Re: ls1 master cylinder on a 3rd gen..
What are the benefits of putting a LT or LS master cylinder in?

Re: ls1 master cylinder on a 3rd gen..
Appearance wise - Looks nicer/cleaner and its smaller. I like the twist-on cap better than the thirdgen cap, just seems like you'd get a good seal everytime, thirdgen cap you got to watch it a little bit.
Performance wise - no gains.

Needless to say, until I find the correct pushrod, the stock master cylinder went back on.

Re: ls1 master cylinder on a 3rd gen..
I found that out the hard way. Evidently, the LS1 pushrod (in my case 2002 Camaro SS, maybe the same?) is a bit shorter than the 3rd gen pushrod. Fortunately, the drive wasn't very far, but the longer 3rd gen pushrod put just enough pressure on the 4th gen M/C piston that my brakes were slightly engaged. They engaged enough to slow the car to a stop while in neutral going down hill. The brakes were very hot and I had some smoke from all four wheels.
Needless to say, until I find the correct pushrod, the stock master cylinder went back on.

I think I also have an issue with that master cylinder. Until I figure out where the problem is, the stock M/C goes back on.
When I removed the 4th gen M/C, I exercised the piston and fluid would only come out where the rear brake line connects, nothing on the front. Seemed to work OK with booster pressure behind it while bleeding the brakes.

Re: ls1 master cylinder on a 3rd gen..
yea, its a totally different design too, the 3rd gen one is just a rod, the 4th gen one has a larger flat end that fits better on the new piston.
I bought my ls1 master with the booster still attached so i had all the pieces, its the only way i would have noticed

so is a ls1 booster needed, or can you just use the push rod from the donor car and it will work fine with the stock booster.

Ok, so a bit confused on this one.. like I mentioned above I went with the ls1 master and have my 82 booster, but no troubles at all..
This is the first I have heard about pushrod lengths being different and I know others on the board have done this without changing the pushrod or booster soooo, should I/we be concerned?

Well answered my own question, took it up a nice hill, put it in neutral and went back down, no dragging of the brakes here.. Not sure why this is a problem for the person above and not for me.. I do have a fourth gen brake pedal however.

Re: ls1 master cylinder on a 3rd gen..
I too have a third gen pushrod and LS1 Master with no problems. I just got back from a 1800 mile trip in it and no issues for me. If this is a concern though I may look into changing it. I have no dragging issues and the car still gets the same gas mileage as before the swap, which if they were hanging up I would think it would be lower.

I don't think this is a common problem, my car stops on a dime.. I was worried since my switch over is recent, but on the hill it went 80mph just coasting and would of gone faster if I'd of let it.. Something to watch out for, but not to sweat about is my thoughts on this..

Re: ls1 master cylinder on a 3rd gen..
From reading all the responses, Id have to agree. I'm thinking the problem I had with mine was with the master cylinder itself (chances you take with used equipment) and had noting to do with the booster's pushrod. When I finish with other brake projects, I'll have to take a good look at this thing or get a new one to complete the swap.

Re: ls1 master cylinder on a 3rd gen..
I (well my stepday) installed a LS1 MC/1LE prop valve/ SLP linelock yesterday, while I was under the car buttoning up the 4th gen rear swap. The MC just installed right in place of the 3rd gen unit, no changing of the rod. Just removed the 3rd gen MC and installed the LS1 MC.

Re: ls1 master cylinder on a 3rd gen..
I might be trying this again next weekend. I took apart the master cylinder I acquired and cleaned it up pretty good - there was alot of gunk inside. I compared booster pushrods while at the junkyard today and noticed there is a significant difference in length most likely due to the depth difference between the two boosters.
Is it possible that the piston in my master cylinder was hanging in the bore due to the junk inside? Maybe this could have caused the excess pressure I had in the system???
