Does anyone know what type of data plate went here?
Hi,
1987 Base Formula. There is a raised part of the front engine plate that appears to have been a home for some type of data plate. It has the two mounting holes for one. Note the area in the black rectangle.
Does anyone know what this was for?
Thanks,
Louis

Re: Does anyone know what type of data plate went here?
I've seen some Camaros in the yards around me with a plate attached there. It just has a 4 or 5 digit code stamped on the plate. I never knew what it meant though. Last time I was at the yard, I ran into a guy looking for some parts for his 87 Z, and he claimed they were number plates for custom factory orders. Something that wasn't in the standard option packages. His example was the optional seats, but the rest of the interior was the standard base interior. Things like that. I don't know if he's right or not, but I suppose it's possible.

H 84,
That's interesting. I wonder if anyone reproduces these plates to original.
Thanks,
Louis

GM used a body tag in the early years, but after the SPID decal in the glove box started in 1984, the tag on the rad support was redundant. Later cars sometimes have a tag with a number that corresponds to a number on the build sheet that was used during assembly. There were plenty of thirdgens built that didn't have anything riveted to the rad support.

IIRC, there was a post in a thread here regarding the radiator support tag's use being specific to either Norwood or Van Nuys (one factory used them, the other didn't).
I don't recall if this was confirmed or not.
