Repair or Replace?
This question isn't third gen related, but I trust your opinions, and I'm not active on other forums.
My wife I recently had an accident in our 2015 Honda Pilot. The body shop is going replace most parts. However, they want to repair the following.
Upper tie bar (HSS)
Note: Overlap minor panel
LT Side Panel (HSS)
Note: Pushed back, out of shape
Overlap minor panel
Pull radiator support area
Note: upper radiator support sides are pushed around, back out of shape
RT Side Panel
Overlap Minor Panel
What does overlap minor panel mean?
Repaired metal is never the same as new metal, and these parts can be replaced for only $350 extra. But, the body shop says the damaged parts will need to be cut out and the new parts will be welded in, which will weaken the integrity of the car. (Will that cause issues with galvanization and rust-proofing?)
What do you think? Should I have the items repaired or replaced?
Thanks!
Bill

From my experience "overlap" is a time statement. Replacing area "a" by itself is so much time and area "b" will be so much time by itself, but when you're replacing the two together it will take less time then if you did them separate so you have "overlap".
As for the repair or replace topic I always go with their recommendation. I always use a reputable shop who offers a warranty on their work.

Overlap refers to paint time. It figures that since the painter is already painting one panel that it should only have to pay 80% for adjacent panels because the painter is already there. Having a panel be adjacent actually only saves about 1% of time so it just screws the painter out of money but I shouldn't get started on that rant just know that its nothing for you to worry about.
If it were me I would have it repaired, not replaced. I know techs that I would trust to do the job of cutting out and welding in the piece but its a hard job and some less experienced techs would make me nervous about doing it right.
