Re: Rust Evaluation, Need input

I'm so glad you decided on repairing your car. I'm also from pa and have owned many of these cars. My recent pickup was an 83 with a complete cage and over 7k in receipts for aftermarket goodies, paid 2300. The po had bought it off the individual who built it and he just knew nothing about cars and completely neglected it. The floorpans were junk, the rear end was burnt up, etc.

I figured if all else I could find a roller and transfer it all over.. I started to tear the car down and I couldn't bear to junk it. I finished stripping it and the floor was the only place that was rusted anything more then just surface. I ground all the rust down, coated the bare metal, cut anything out that was questionable, and now I'm getting ready to grind down the remaining welds and finish coating the floors and underbody.

I have quite a lot of time into repairing all this rust but I do not regret it in any way shape or form. I know what I have, and I know it was repaired correctly.

It's nice to see a fellow pennsyltuckian not succumbing to body rot!

Some more shots of the finished work. Check earlier in the thread for before pics. Body shop wasn't able to get it perfect, but it's much better than what it was. And all the rust is gone!

Now I just need to lay down the FatMat and throw the interior in it!

Re: Rust Evaluation, Need input

Congratulations! Money well spent!

For those of you who have rust you want to remove (not grind or cut out) try EvapoRust. A well known no-mile GNX that had been stored poorly over the years was "restored" using a sprinkler setup under the car that continually dowsed the underside & brought it back to new over the course of a couple weeks using this stuff.

Nice! So, did they manage to get you some new channels for the t-top seals? Can't make it out from those pics.

No new channels for the t-top seals. The work involved in getting them from a decent donor car and patching them in would have doubled my bodyshop bill. The channels were cleaned up, rust cut out, and the weatherstripping was applied with a generous amount of adhesive. I almost never drive the car with the tops off anyway.
