Paint code help red 91 Formula 350
Ran into some repair work under the hood for my LS1 swap so prepping and cleaning up the engine bay now as well.
It is a 91 Formula and is the original factory red paint although quite faded on the exterior(will be painted in the fall). It is red as in red like the majority of 91-92 Firehawks.
I need paint to match for the engine bay now however.
Best I can come up with is:
Believe this was a DuPont color book(I'm not a body guy)
Base/clear
70/9593
B9015
Color is named torch Red?
Can anyone confirm these numbers for me? SPID label is not on this car(only one missing it lol)
Thanks
Jeremy

Re: Paint code help red 91 Formula 350
The color is definitely not torch red. GM didn't have torch red until the 1993 model year and that was on Corvettes. The correct color name is Bright Red(some suppliers also call it Flame Red). CAUTION: there are two shades of GM bright red. I'll mosey out to my paint supply and see if I can get the code. Bright red was used on a variety of GM cars from 1985 to current models.
The only code I can find on my cans is on DuPont Nason. Code 8774. I believe that is the WA# but it could be the Nason code. I had torn off the label on another can that had the 2-digit code on it.
Anyway, I've just painted my 92 RS and its original color is bright red. If the above code doesn't fix you up, I'll look on the SPD label. I didn't have the keys to the car and it's HOT outside. :-)
The underhood paint is the same color; however, the factory didn't spray clearcoat over the color under the hood and some other "interior" areas.

Most birds I have seen have clear under the hood around the front and edges, the front top of the firewall, strut tower areas, and along the front and core support.
It did vary on how much was done..
I have a friend with a red 91 350, it should have the same paint code.
Have you tried to get the info from the dealer with the VIN?

There were two colors of red in '91... Brilliant Red (GM WA9540, Dupont B9009) which looked more maroon, and Bright Red (GM WA8774, Dupont C8508) which looked... well bright red lol!
