Glass Z28 hood?

I got a used SMC Z28 hood and it has a insulated hood liner on it. Is it ok to remove it or could the heat possibly cause the hood to distort?

Re: Glass Z28 hood?

I'm not sure if it would distort but they were discontinued due to separation issues. (There is a bonding material in-between the two halves.)

If you don't already know, you'll need lighter support struts as the stock ones for metal hood can cause them to fold in half. I've seen it happen more than once.

Re: Glass Z28 hood?

I removed my liner years ago, no ill effects whatsoever.

Mine also separated around the same time.I fiberglassed it back together, as well no issues in 15+ years.

I'm using worn out steel hood struts.

Re: Glass Z28 hood?

Thanks for the info, but for the next dumb question. What years were the glass hoods used?

I'm going to say 82-83 with 1984 switching to metal. Then louvers in 1985, and bubble sometime after that.

Re: Glass Z28 hood?

The insulation stuff under your hood is really for one purpose. It is a piece that drops if there is a fire in your engine compartment. The plastic pins that hold it in have a lower melting point.
