My Black with blue pearl , with silver pearl stripes, and blue metal flake paint job
lol long thread topic i know, but i figured id share my paint progress as i get this thing all sprayed
for paint i am using
Primer
Summit black epoxy primer kit
Base coat
spi pure black base -- with blue pearl powder mixed in
clear
for the clear i will be using spi clear as well
this will come out just like the car pictured below
black in low/no light and blue in light/sunlight
ontop of the black blue base we will be doing a set of ghost racing stripes with the silver pearl
once thats done the stripes will be masked off and the rest of the car will be sprayed with a light coat of .015 blue metal flake
this is the flake
the car has already been primed and is waiting to be blocked and then it will be ready for the base
this weekend we are going to spray the engine bay so i can get the new engine back in the car
once my new 4 or 6 inch outlaw hood gets here ( havent picked one yet)
we will spray the rest of the car probably be about a week or 2
this is how the car sits now after primer
should make for a subtle but wild paint job when u actually pay attention to the car
also in the last picture u can see why i ditched the factory hood

Re: My Black with blue pearl , with silver pearl stripes, and blue metal flake paint
im having some issues and didnt even paint the engine bay today
anyways i started with 8 grams of pearl on the black base but it wasnt enough
eventually i got upto 35 grams of pearl per sprayable quart of paint
we were testing on my junk iroc hood which honestly wasnt preped very well so it will look like tons of orange peel but we just wanted to get a feel for how much pearl to add
anyways heres some pics
the hood right before we sprayed it
black base with 35 grams of pearl per quart and one coat of clear ( indoors in the shade)
it shows up jet black just like it should
then we took the hood outside , and it shows up the blue pearl and metalic in it
looks ok from this angle ( not enough pearl yet trying to get a deeper blue when in the sun)
then we switch angles and u can see striping everywere
then from this side it looks even again
anyways i ran out of paint trying to get it right and had a bunch of clear left so i threw some pearl in just the clear and sprayed it over the black primer i love the color but it doesnt give me the color changing effect i want
it looks like its got stripes and squares in it but thats because i sprayed 4 different mixtures of clear and pearl in the same area
upclose so u can see the color
and far away so u can see the different mixtures
this was the first area i did with the pearl in the clear and then went over it with some small metal flake in the clear , like the effect but the metal flake color was to dark compared to the pearl
anyways i have a much more experianced friend comming by so we can see if he can spray without getting any striping , if he can were going to paint the car with the pearl in the black base like the first few pics except go from 35 grams a quart to 50 to bring out the blue more
if we cant get that to spray without striping i will spray the whole car black then mix the pearl in the clear and spray the car the color that u see in the last 3 or so pics since we know we can get that to come out even
maybe somone here can help me figure out why we are getting the stripes in the black base blue pearl mix

Re: My Black with blue pearl , with silver pearl stripes, and blue metal flake paint
we have tried different overlaps, different air presures , moving faster or slower etc and they just wont go away
it almost seems like the stripes are comming in on the very edge of the spray pattern on both the top and bottom of the spray
the gun has a 1.5 tip in it
and please dont hound me about the organge peel and bad prep i know about it, the hood was a junk hood and was only preped enough to test painting on before i tried to spray the actual car
i can promise u the car will be preped 1000x better

Re: My Black with blue pearl , with silver pearl stripes, and blue metal flake paint
I always put the pearl in the base it just works out better that way you can buff the clear out without creating those strips and your problem may be that you are applying wet coats wet coats can create a mottle effect witch can make it look like a stripe or spots with pearl you need to apply medium coats so that they are even
PS they make spray out cards that you can use so you don't use so much material to test your color

yeah i burnt up a wuart of black base and a qaurt of clear on that junk hood, we sprayed like 25 different test sections on it.
turns out besides being inexperianced with pearls, the cheap lacquer i was using wasnt holding the pearl powder properly.
i had bought a quart of duplicolor clear and base to practive with not relising that they wouldnt work.
guys on anothe rforum have given me a bunch of tips which will help.on monday im going to my local body shop in town and ill pick up a quart of ppg black and some clear and try again with that.
if i still have issues with the pearl i have another friend who is a painter and we will get him to come down and spray the car for me.im really hoping i can get it myself though.
its a really good feeling when somone asks that u can tell them u did every last bit of work on the car yourself

Re: My Black with blue pearl , with silver pearl stripes, and blue metal flake paint
you have to spray a little bit faster and overlap 75%
give that a try. and by faster I mean you are spraying light med coats. works best with pearls and metallic
learn how to walk the entire side of the car. you cannot spray pearl or metallic panel by panel. do some practicing because laying down a pearl paint job takes GREAT *****

Re: My Black with blue pearl , with silver pearl stripes, and blue metal flake paint
im not even going to try again even though we identified and fixed the issue we were having.
i just got back from my local body shop and as long as i have the car fully preped and ready to go including masked off they will spray it for 250$'s
i think that prices is worth it alone just for the fact the car will be in a real paint booth not the homemade one we made
instead of custom mixing my paint i just ordered a whole kit of midnight blue pearl which should be close to what i was going for
