utfan01ss - Would you believe that the dark red metallic was the second highest selling color in 1987? Red was first, then dark red metallic, then black for the top three. In 1988, it fell to 3rd behind black and in 1989 it fell to 4th. It was a very popular color. It's not my first choice preference for color on these cars, but it seems that it was very popular to others.

I never realized that... All I've seen around here are the standard, red, black, white and blue. There is a yellow IROC that runs around the Cleveland area. But I've never seen a dark red metallic car, other than my own.
I guess they are out there, just not around the Chattanooga area... interesting facts nonetheless.

My favorite color is that bright blue color... but it was hard locating one in good condition so I settled for this car. Which I like... seems white was popular because I see a bunch of white third gens around here. Mostly RS cars though.

Got the car finally! Got a little dirty leaving the parking lot but the paint looks fantastic. I'm going to clean it then take some better pictures this weekend. Three weeks of waiting paid off, very happy with the results.

So I get the car back, excited to finally drive it since it's freshly painted.... then guess what happens. The transmission falls out, lost 3rd and 4th. It's basically stuck in 1st gear but I can manually get it in 2nd. So I don't know what the deal is...
Guess it's 6 speed time a little early. Ugh

Yeah it sucks having the trans bite the dust, but it's a chance to upgrade to something better.

I decided to install Grey emblems instead of the factory red. This paint job is more burnt orange than dark red, which I'm fine with, so I think Grey looks better.
It's easier to see also... so I'll leave the door decals off and keep it simple.

Re: pics of my car in body shop
Very, very nice.
When you say clean it what exactly do you plan to do ?
You are extremely limited as to what you should use.
I use Meguiars shampoo and conditioner and a microfiber sponge. = http://www.meguiars.com/en/automotiv...ditioner-64oz/
Heres what Meguiar's has to say about the soap =
Meguiar's Gold Class Car Wash Shampoo & Conditioner is safe and OK to use on your freshly painted car. Gold Class Car Wash Shampoo & Conditioner contains conditioning properties in the soap to nourish the paint and provide a magnificent high gloss, but it does not contain an actual wax. In fact out of all of Meguiar's car wash soaps, the only one that is not recommended for use on fresh paint is our Ultimate Wash & Wax, as it contains an actual wax in the soap.
I also use a gritguard you put in the bottom of a new 5 gallon bucket to alow any particals from getting back on your sponge. It traps them at the bottom = http://www.gritguard.com/the-grit-guard-insert.html
Also you must get it dry quickly because of water spots showing up.
Here by far this is one of the finest drying towels available. Buy two, one for each hand. Honesty, I would not wash my car without them.Check out the reviews.
Here it is =
http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/t...ontent=6140043
When the time came for a decision on what to put on the car first it was not really that hard.
My painter said there is an alternative to wax.
Synthetics.
This is the only thing I have used in the last 6 years other than Race Glaze once a year for a beep clean, polish and sealant. (also synthetic)
Here’s the Synthetic wax = http://www.meguiarsdirect.com/product/4841
And here’s the Race Glaze = http://www.raceglaze.com/polish.html

Thanks, I'm pretty fond of it. My car is an 89. We got it new. June 2, 1989. I've seen plenty of blue ones for sale. Seems it was a rather popular color.
As far as the transmission, mine gave me zero warning. We were on the hot rod power tour, I stopped at a red light, heard this little "noise" ???? When I pulled away from the light, it wouldn't shift out of first. I did get it to shift to second once. It was a god awful violent shift. I stopped and started again and nothing but first, reverse and park.

Too bad the emblems don't use the correct font. This is another problem we as thirdgenners have to deal with. The only replacement parts available are far from correct. No offense, but the Z is way off from correct on those and the lines are way too thick. So much for us having correct replacement parts!

Scottmoyer, I agree on the emblems. It is annoying that you can't find OEM or correct decals and emblems for this car. Even the adhesive on those decals weren't the same or as effective as the stock ones were.
I guess they will work for now. If something new comes out that is correct then I'll upgrade.
As far as the transmission.... I don't know what happened. I drove the car up to Manchester TN to pick my kids up and it drove fine. But on the way back it starting making a faint roar of some sort... not really loud but was noticeable. So I made it to my exit and as I approached the red light it slammed into 1st gear, then wouldn't upshift. It also made my car get somewhat hot, the engine was running at 220 roughly. Which I have a cold temp thermostat and the fans run constantly so I don't know why it was getting warm. Anyway I managed to get it to shift into 2nd by manually shifting it.... no 3rd or overdrive.
I pulled the dip stick this morning and the fluid is burnt and metal shaving are all over it. So the trans is toast. I'm starting to wonder if someone at that shop didn't abuse the car. But there is no way to prove it. Definitely frustrating.....

Ron,
Thanks for all that information! That answered some questions I had about maintaining this paint job.
Now I've always used Meguires spray detailer and a microfiber cloth to clean my car, especially at shows. Would that hurt this fresh clear coat?
And I need to find a different tire shine product. I've been using Tire wet foam but it throws it on the paint and traps dirt. Which is annoying.

I would not use detailer until you find out if it is safe. Call Meguires and ask.
The Abzorber drying synthetic shammy that I suggested is stored it the plastic bottle it came with and you do not dry the towel .Just rince it out and wring it out and roll it up and put it in its holder.
I found that if I find water spots,or really any blemish on the car I keep one behind my seat and simply take it out already damp and gently wipe it off. The result is beautiful paint.
I use Meguiars Hot Shine. A great product.
When you use a spray like Hot Shine get sponge made for it at Walmart then spray the sponge not the tire. Works great and all I have to do is go around and wipe off the outside edge of the rim.
Trust me when I tell you this. You've seen my car. I would not use any thing that did not work flawlessly.

Re: pics of my car in body shop
lol... I hear you. Yeah this color is beautiful, especially in the sunlight and under street lights at night. It really pops..
I am very satisfied with the Inferno Red Metallic my body shop sprayed the car with. It has a burnt orange tint to it. I still have to install the gray and black pin striping along the ground effects. Going to do that once I get the motor built and put back in, hopefully in the next month or two. Just picked up a set of C6 ZO6 wheels for the car too... Can't wait to get it all together
