flat black or gloss black (headlight area)

Painting my front bumper tomorrow. Im still trying to decide if I should do the headkight area gloss black or flat black. I have the front bumper grill insert that is all fkat black with the word camaro in the middle and the letters are white. Found that piece in local junkyard. But unless I paint that grill piece gloss black Iwas thinking it may looks a little odd? Need oppinions. Also does anyone know what to use for the headlight area if I do flat black. I know its just not flat black paint. Its something a little more durable I just dont know what it is

Re: flat black or gloss black (headlight area)

Originals were semi-gloss or gloss... most people seem to agree they should be semi-gloss but there are exceptions from the factory.

I think it's probably better to go semi-gloss/flat unless you have buckets that are super straight and not warped like most of these are.

That said, like I mentioned, the factory often sent out semi-gloss buckets with the shiny black grille, but the fact is those black grilles may be shiny, but they are nowhere near as shiny as, for example, black paint. They are not mirrors. Semigloss or even flat (like my car with the plastidip) doesnt look out of place at all.

Re: flat black or gloss black (headlight area)

I went with gloss black on mine, it matches the blisters on the hood.
I think it looks great, and really glad I went this route

Re: flat black or gloss black (headlight area)

imo i think if your bumper is warped a little, id go with semi-gloss. but if not id go gloss.

Re: flat black or gloss black (headlight area)

It depends on the overall paint. If the car is a extremely high gloss with a high gloss bowtie insert like mine then I decided to go high gloss. On some a very high gloss might seem out of place. That goes both ways. Anything other then high gloss would seem out of place to me on my car.=

Re: flat black or gloss black (headlight area)

I have the same grill as "mirror image" I think ill do gloss black. It would look better with the car. Its medium quasar blue metallic and we put a lot of clear on the car. I think the gloss black will look good. I might have to gloss blacl the grill

Re: flat black or gloss black (headlight area)

These cars came from the factory with semi-gloss on the buckets. I elected to gloss mine with clear so that it wouldn't oxidize like the original semi-gloss paint.

No there weren't. If they were black from the factory, they were a satin black. There was not a flat black or a gloss black from the factory. The front grill area changed to gloss finish from satin in 1990 or 1991. I don't remember.

All the ones that I remember had just enough shine that you could see the head light in the black and that wouldnt be satin satin is just about as flat as flat

Re: flat black or gloss black (headlight area)

flat, matte, eggshell, satin, silk, semi-gloss, high gloss. These terms are not standardized, and not all manufacturers use all these terms.

Tomato, tomahto. Ones mans satin is another mans flat and another mans matte. Specular reflection is much more complicated than that.

I'm sure GM had a paint code for the buckets. It's likely unavailable now. I think they look better painted the color of the car so as not to look like a gothic, manic depressive. :P

Satin black for factory originality, anything else would be more of a custom approach.

Re: flat black or gloss black (headlight area)

Satin black or Semi gloss, whatever you decide to call it. It is not high gloss on any factory produced Z28 or Heritage Edition.

Do a search on the History forum and you will see exactly what cars got what. You may even find the SEM color code for the exact finish.

I remember a few examples here of cars with gloss buckets and the owners swore up and down they were original owners and the car had never been repainted etc etc. You know how the story goes. They're probably wrong, but I can't prove it. They are isolated cases and like you I tend to agree that most, if not all, got semi-gloss buckets. I did NOT know that the earlier CAMARO grille inserts were satin black, that's interesting.

Did we as a community ever establish for sure that black cars got semi-gloss buckets? I remembered a thread addressing it but I dont remember what the conclusion was and I couldn't find it.

Black car with "non-gloss" buckets

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/hist...t-pockets.html

BTW, I reread my post above and it doesn't say anything about the non Z28 cars. The non Z28 and non Heritage Edition cars had the headlight buckets painted the same color as the car. In the case of a black car, they were painted gloss black to match the car. That's the only time the buckets would be high gloss.

I could swear that I have seen some sport coupe cars with black buckets. I could be wrong though as I never paid that much attention to SC camaros.

i think it should match the grill insert.. i mean this is totally just my opinion. i've been debating this since i carbon wrapped my grill.. i think i'm going to wrap my buckets in carbon too, since my hood is also going to be carbon

It's conceivable that your grille is carbon fiber, but I dont think anyone is going to believe your front clip is carbon fiber. It gets into this weird sort of....

I liken it to painting steel wheels an aluminum color and saying it's aluminum...

But theres all kinds of form over function things on these cars that we give a free pass so I dont know.
