Locked keys inside car, DOH!

So I had a moment of mental lapse, and locked my keys inside my car.. Heres my question, how could I get the door/ rear hatch open? It has manual locks, so they are the horizontal kind. also, the rear hatch has about an inch or two gap in weatherstripping thats not touching right in front of the little latch that locks it shut, and I can put a finger in and touch the latch mechanism. I really dont want to get a locksmith, as they charge more since i live on a military base. The Military Police are lame and dont carry slim jims like regular police, so no luck there. Thanks!

Have a hatch release button? You can gently pull the window out and flip it with a broom handle. wrecker services have an air bag that inflates between the window and the gasket at the roof line to do this.

Re: Locked keys inside car, DOH!

You can do the same thing and unlock the opposite door lock. Just need a longer stick with a pointy end.

Re: Locked keys inside car, DOH!

I told my wife the car never spends the night outside after I locked my keys in the car. I literally opened the door with a ruler! Just pull back the window molding at the corner of the door. Visualize the lock cylinder rod position and push down. That simple It is that scary!

See the attached picture...The red represents the lock cylinder the black line is the connecting rod to the door lock. Anyway...Push down to open pull up to lock. I assume the ruler probably made contact at the plastic rod connector.

Slim-Jim's work great on these cars. I don't know why you think they don't.

Who said they don't work? The OP said he had no access to one and alternative suggestions were made.

Re: Locked keys inside car, DOH!

Good ideas, but it's probably not helping the rest of us by broadcasting to the world clearly detailed instructions on how easy it is to break into our cars.

Re: Locked keys inside car, DOH!

If that scares you, you would be terrified on how easy they are to start up and drive off once you're in. NOT going to post that, just let me say it's unwise to park on the road like badtennant said.

Doesn't scare me, I just don't see any benefit from doing so. It's good reading and I might even try the ruler idea out of curiosity.
Ignorance is bliss can be taken a different way sometimes.

Carry on, I see that he could just as well have Googled the topic and found a bunch of threads on the subject.

Its amazing how much the windows can flex. I broke into mine with a door stop and stick from a tree Took about 30 seconds, if that. And i'm not a pro.

Totally misread that post, I thought he had access to a slim-jim but it wouldn't work.

Re: Locked keys inside car, DOH!

I used a ruler, straight down beside the lock cylinder. Took me a while to get it. Once I did it the first time, I can get it opened in less than 5 minutes every time now. I was amazed at how easy it really was. I also used a paint stir stick, worked great.
