Re: cleaning underbody?

clean w/ kerosine and scotch pad (if there's undercoating on it), take it back to the factory e coatm clean up any rust spots, prime and then spray on something that is not sticky goop like most people use

Re: cleaning underbody?

factory undercoating is there. Does that need to come off and will kerosine and a scotch pad take it off easily? Ive been thinking of using a wire brush or wheel on a drill.

Re: cleaning underbody?

wheel wells and the little rear section but the kerosine will take off the grease and gunk everywhere else easy?

Re: cleaning underbody?

I've read on here simple green and a pressure washer works pretty well also. Believe the guy sprayed it on and let it soak before spraying a second time and then using the pressure washer. Worth a try, and if nothing else it may reduce the work with the kerosene and scrubbing.

Re: cleaning underbody?

Body shop told me to use WD40(bought a gallon, way to much)while up on lift, I sprayed the whole undercarriage with it and it cleaned-up all that surface rust of all the metal parts, then I used 3M undercoating right over the(Dealers) existing coating.Came out pretty good.Make sure you cover the floor with a painters plastic tarp, very messy.
PS,Don"t put the undercoating where it doesn't belong

Re: cleaning underbody?

Pressure washer and straight Purple Power. Or, if no PP, just the pressure washer. Don't worry too much about the factory coating in the wheel wells unless it's flaking off. That crap takes FOREVER to take off even with a grinder with a wire wheel. Use a wire wheel or something on the rust spots and cover them with something and then go out and get the big gallon kit of DupliColor Bed Armor or whatever you choose to use as an undercoat (the gallon kit is best as you will have leftovers in case you need to do touch ups and it's 2/3 the price of the quarts you will need).

Oh, and if the factory coating is coming off in the wheel wells, you need to make sure there isn't rust behind or around it and also check the seam sealer underneath to make sure it isn't hardened and cracking/falling out. Especially in the rear wheel wells where several panels come together at the rear and the tires sling water up through the remaining hole into the spare tire compartment and the "glove box" on the other side, which WILL create rust issues in the future if not taken care of now. A caulk tube of seam sealer isn't very expensive.

Re: cleaning underbody?

all of the following worked well for me

- cup brush from a grinder (I tried this on the grinder, it made a bigger mess because it was flinging grease and undercoat all over the place. I used it by hand). I used the grinder on the wheel wells. it worked good, but not faster/cleaner than jet strip.

-break clean (fastest way to remove grease... make sure you have a tarp under the car)

- arousal jet stripper (nothing worked better than this). This was the fastest most effective thing. If you don't scrape the crud off the bottom of the car fast enough, it will take you to bare metal.

I only had 2 cans of Jet strip... that's the only reason I didn't use it on the whole underbody.

I have sense painted and coated the under body with bedliner
