How much did you spend on body work?

I recently purchased another third gen that needs a little body work. The hood has a couple small dents, the fender has a small dent that got semi repaired and the usual dings on the doors... Not only that but the paint is faded. If it wasnt a G92 car, I would have passed but that coupled with the fact everything else on the car is 100% stock and in awesome shape made me pay up the cash.

I have never done body work. I know it can be done but simply put, I dont want to risk hours for a disaster when I have very little expertise.

So I guess I am looking for some encouragement here. lol

Re: How much did you spend on body work?

Where I live bodywork/paint costs $50-$65 an hour depending on the shop. Theres a reason it costs so much - it takes skill to do a decent job and a lot of skill to do a show car job. Its not as easy as people seem to think. When I started doing bodywork I screwed up a LOT of dents and had to redo them before they went to the painter. When I switched to doing paint work it was the same thing... It takes practice and time to get good at anything like that.

If you do it yourself be prepared to spend a lot of time on it to get it looking decent. I'm not trying to discourage you from trying it, but just know that it wouldn't be easy.

Re: How much did you spend on body work?

A few months ago a guy brought an 84 trans am into the shop wanting an estimate for a complete paint job painted the same factory two tone colors. It was in great shape, no rust, just a dozen very small hail dents and door dings. The estimator quoted him over $10,000 for the paint job. You should be able to find a shop to paint it for less than that, but the lower the price is, sometimes lower the quality of the work and materials are. Take the car to a couple body shops, tell them what you want done and they'll write you up an estimate, then pick the shop with the lowest price that has a good reputation

Re: How much did you spend on body work?

I do all the body work myself, spend well over 2k, but that's because my car was a rusty POS, but decided to save it.

Here's some things I bought, I'm probably leaving a lot out.
Both fenders, Both quarter panels, full floor, both rocker panels, minitubs, countless 16 gauge metal, a load of paint/primer/rust-remover, and the tools. Oh and probably a 1/3 of the cost was welding wire and c25. My car is frankenstein, literally.
