1985 Z28 Project

Well I went and bought this car on Saturday in Laporte. It's a 1985 Z28 with a 355, th700r4 with some work done to it, 3.73 rear-end with a posi. Car only has surface rust in small spots. 355 wiped a cam lobe so it is being pulled and a temp engine is going in while the 355 is gone through and built. Best part is I only paid $600 for the car.

Thanks I appreciate the kind words. On these cars how do you go about using a mechanical fuel pump?

Re: 1985 Z28 Project

Too bad about the engine but what a deal for only 6 bones!!

As far as the fuel pump goes you just make sure the line is clear from the tank. Just the filter "sock" on the end. No stock tank fuel pump to get in the way. You can probably delete the stock filter too and add one after the pump but before the carb.

Others may disagree...

Sweet deal, Around here that's a $1500 car all day not running. Does the car have a block mounted fuel pump now or is there an intake pump still?

Problem is both, the guy told me it worked that way but kept blowing diaphragms in the block fuel pump. But that doesn't make sense to me how there can be both?

Okay so I found the temp motor that will be in the car. Hate to say this but it's a 305. Here's the deal I'm buy the 305 with a th350 bolted to it for $200 and I'm going to pick it next weekend.

Well I got my motor and transmission today. The 355 should be ready to pull anytime I move the car into the driveway, but before that can happen I need to adjust the rear brakes on the car.

Re: 1985 Z28 Project

I got the transmission bolted up to the motor, next thing I have to do is bolt the torque converter to the flexplate and start putting minor things back on.

I will try to grab some tomorrow, right now I have to figure out how to bolt the flexplate to the torque converter. It doesn't have the normal threaded torque converter in it, it has a flat plate with no threads like this one.

i had one like that throw a nut behind it. Then rotate the crank with a johnson bar and the proper socket to access the other mounting points.

Okay I was thinking this but it seemed too easy, I can rotate it fairly easy because I have the spark plugs out right now.

maybe put some blue thread lock on just to make sure your bolts dont vibrate loose and yep always easier to rotate when the plugs are out

I'm not rushing trust me, so far this has been a 2 week process. We are just gonna fire it to make sure it runs, then we're gonna throw some performance parts on it since they are free.

Re: 1985 Z28 Project

Good deal. These cars are getting hard to find around here for less than a grand. Expecially in that condition. They're right about the fuel tank mounted fuel pump. My 84 with the HO carbed engine had one in it. It was something GM did to help with vapor lock issues.

Cool project, especially for the money. I think it would look great in black as long as the body is laser straight. Keep the pics coming

Thanks guys, the car will have tons of blocking done to it if I go with black. I didn't really accomplish anything today on the car. I was missing one torque converter bolt and couldn't get any at any of our local auto parts or hardware stores.

Re: 1985 Z28 Project

Well guys its time for an update and sorry I haven't for a couple of months. Well the car now runs and drives. After months of owning this car I have just realized while swapping a starter last night, that my car in fact does not have th700r4 but a th350. This makes me so happy from the fact that it is a B&M transmission. Still has the little 305 in it that is cammed. Has Hooker competition shorty headers on it. I sold the 355 last week to a good friend of mine, I decided to not keep it because it needed some work and it was a 2-bolt main. That same day I bought a 350 complete minus a flexplate and pushrods and is a 4-bolt main for $200 cash. I may be turning this motor into a 383 not sure yet though. Next up is the body, not much has been done to this but that will change this week, hopefully today or tomorrow I will be going to buy a set of doors for my car from a local junkyard which should only cost me about $100. I also have decided I am going to paint my car synergy green the same color as the new Camaros. I may also throw in some black or light grey stripping not sure yet. Got any questions or comments let me know.

Re: 1985 Z28 Project

Well I'm back to black for my main color with the synergy green as some kind of stripe of secondary color. Anyone have any ideas or something they have done? I want it to be unique to my area since not many of these cars locally have non-stock paint jobs. Also included is a picture of the green I want to use.

Re: 1985 Z28 Project

Well this car has taken a drastic turn, this is going to be a full on drag car now. I am in the process of tearing the car down and starting the body work. Only needs the driver floor replaced thats the only real major body work. I am replacing the doors, fenders, and the bumpers. I am working in a two-car garage but it is split in the middle so it looks small. Here are some pictures of it so far.

Re: 1985 Z28 Project

Well update on this its been awhile. It's still in pieces in my garage. I have recently bought parts door shells, fenders, and hood. And clean painted and 65,xxx miles 5.3 LS. Plans are to turbo, fix floor, cage, and redo the front setup in lightening up the car. Use a Vega steering box. Big plans so its gonna take awhile. Open to help and suggestions on all things.
