82-92 Camaro cargo cover

The springs in the cargo cover on my '92 Anniversary 3rdGen are weak and barely take up the slack when I close the hatch. What's the procedure to overhaul this component and make it like new? Appreciate any help to fix this, thanks.

they are a simple fix.

have someone hold up the hatch while you unbolt the strut from it's mount on the bottom.

once that is done, take off the strut on the hatch itself and put on the new one. try to get struts that have the plugin for the defroster if you can.

as well... you will need someone strong to hold up the hatch, it's damn heavy.

enjoy

i think he's talking about the cover, not the shocks, but I may be wrong. I would like to know how to fix the cover though as mine doesn't roll up all the way either sometimes and so it always comes unhooked.
Thanks

Yes, that's correct -- the canvas thingy doesn't roll-up anymore. I need to know the procedure to pull it apart and renovate the spring. It might be a simple "windup" but I don't want to bust it in the process.

Please, anyone knowing please help.

Nothing in there?! Hmmm, so the actual spring is NOT in the tube ... is it part of the end caps?

Is the tube easy to remove from the caps without breaking anything?

Someone would have to check, but I think it works just like a roller-blind, you can take it out and put a few twists of "preload" in it.

Yep, that's what I think too. I also recall some roller blinds doing weird stuff and flopping around when the springs were suddenly disengaged, hehe.

Rather than invent a procedure that might break something in this hard-to-replace part, I'm hoping for input actually describing how-to-do-it.

Surely *someone* in our 6,000+ membership here has this carnal experience [grin]!

Hey, I was just browsing your 3rdGen site, you've got some nice how-to articles!

Yeah, I'll pursue how to renovate the cargo covers and also add one to my '87, so expect a plea from me to pickup a tan cargo cover hopefully soon! Will write a tech article with photos for all to use.

Please, still need some tech help about how to renovate the weak spring tension on the roller that won't retract the canvas cargo cover on my '92 Z-28.

Must be someone here that's done it!

Mine was sloppy when I got it but after using it a bit its fine. It sat in a yard awhile before I got it and in that time I think it got a little corroded inside and that caused it to bind, working it in and out over the course of a year seems to have fixed it cause it works as its supposed to now.

The assembly is riveted together if I remember correctly, so its not really servicable.

I'm still waiting to find one in a junkyard; by the time I find a car with one; it's been ripped out. (sigh)

Drew -- No problem with a riveted assembly, I certainly don't mind re-riveting it back together. What I'm afraid of is taking it apart and have it go "sproing" like a Jack-in-the-box and toss guts everywhere -- then I'll be stuck trying to put it back together without a diagram. Any idea how it works?

Re: 82-92 Camaro cargo cover

This thread is back from the dead. I have the same problem. I just installed a cargo hatch cover and the curtain doesnt retract. So every time I drive with the windows down, the curtain begins to give out slack and rests on the subwoofers. So has anyone figured out a solution?

Re: 82-92 Camaro cargo cover

Sorry for resurrecting this thread again

Anyone has any updates on this subject? My cargo cover doesn't retract. It is a hassle to close the hactch to keep it in place. I use it to protect my hatch area from the Florida sun!!!

Thanks!
