modify rear firebird markers to make flush fit
Hello all,
I'm redoing my 85 TA from scratch, totally disassembled. This project is to make a mostly stock TA but eliminating or changing all the little things I don't like.
One thing is to eliminate all the plastic and metal surrounds in the body like the fender vents and hood vents. I changed the fenders to GTA style, changed the 4vent hood to power bulge. Now I'm trying to eliminate the rear marker surrounds. Anyone just welded the metal brackets in and fill the gap?
Any other ideas you've tried?
I have the body completely stripped right now. Eliminating the small amount of floor pan rust, fixing the quarter panel dents and just finished cutting the holes to convert to manual tranny and cut off the manual hatch latch bracket. This week I'm welding the power pull down bracket in and fixing the dent that is right at the right rear marker, so I'm going to try this mod at the same time.
I was thinking of putting 4th gen ones in, but they apparently have a visible screw in them, don't like that either.
Any ideas?

a friend of mine is planning to swap the rear bird markers out for front markers, using a pair of front marker and the surrounding metal cut from a set of trash fenders. no pics cause its not done, but thats what to do.
buy crap fenders, cut a section out, cut a matching hole in the quarter and weld back in.

I was thinking about that, but then the rear markers would be the wrong color. I have plenty of fenders to chop up.
would red tint work over yellow?
I'm a little **** about lights, illegal light mods are kind of a pet peeve of mine.

Just use the VHT lens paint to convert them to red like the Camaro guys use to convert their amber tail light lens sections to red.

Yes the bulb thing won't work since the reflector would still be illegal and wouldn't look right anyway.
The Vht thing was what I was thinking of. The guys on the Jeep forum do the same thing.
Anyone know if I would still need the red bulb or would white look ok?
I'm going to go cut out the fender markers, post some pics when I get them installed.
Thanks for the ideas guys!

I did the VHT Translucent Red mod to my clear Reverse lenses to convert them over to tail lights & used red bulbs.

Re: modify rear firebird markers to make flush fit
Quick update on this, I'll get some pics up as soon as I can.
Just wanted to stop anyone else from starting the wrong way as I did.
I cut out the fender light mounts but I made a tactical error in welding in the new ones. I cut out the whole marker mounting section and butt welded the fender piece in. Unfortunately, I didn't notice the fender material is thinner than the QP sheet metal. This means it gets out of shape when you weld it in, even with the proper gap. It's noticeably flimsier than the rest of the panel.
What I should have done is use the original QP marker recess to FLANGE weld the fender piece into the same hole. I didn't do that at first because I was thinking it would be hardto get the fender piece at he exact same depth. Now I'm thinking that wouldn't have been as hard as I thought.
Soo, to fix this I'm going to weld a little reinforcement brace around the marker area to get it to maintain the proper shape.
I did find one other issue with this mod, there is no water seal in the fender markers.
Might not matter for my car as its a fair weather/show car only, but could cause some issues in a daily driver.
I'll get one pics up soon.

What you are talking about is called Candying. Go to a place the sells model car paint and get a can of transparent candy red. Spay the amber lense whit the candy red. The light will now light up red with a clear bulb in it. I have done this before and in fact the rear turn signals on my step dad's Hraley are like this and have been for a few years.
