1991 Camaro fuel tank

Need to know how much pain in the @ss dropping the fuel tank will be.My father thinks we will be able to do if without dropping the rear end though removing the exhaust.(but I don't feel like breaking anything that's not on my list to replace.) I'm either repairing the tank or finding a used one. Post pics of the hassle or tricks of doing this, want to get it done in one day nothing more.Also if you know of a place or website of where to buy a fuel tank feel free to post those as well.

the axle and exhaust must be dropped to get to the fuel tank, look up cutting an access door by the hatch area, even though its a hack job it will save a lot of trouble

I dropped mine without having to take off the exaust, just had to remove the 2 bars. hardest part was putting back up ( just myself)

oh and i am going to be picking up a 82 z28 and going to be parting it. i am going to be removeing fuel tank to use the fuel senging unit. interested?,

Also, i could be done in a day if you rush it though. while its down i would clean the tank and units with tank cleaning solvent and lube everything up to get it tip top shape bro.

some people have said that they where able to slide the tank out at an angle, the tank has a lil bit of weight to it. I dropped my whole rear and exhaust when I did it tho... not impossible

No. It is correcting a factory oversight. Besides...."hack job" only refers to HOW it is done. It can be done quite professionally & cleanly.

wow thats amazing, i would like to ask how did you do this? and how can i go about to start this, im going to be dropping my tank again ( to fix my fuel float) and ill probably need to replace the pump again one day (because im turboing my v6)

Thanks for the offer but im not sure if the 1982 tank will fit the 1992.Heard from my boss only 1990-1992 will fit my year of car,but if anyone has done let me know so can get if done.Thanks For The info GreenCAmaro13

Not mine. Just a pic I found no telling how long ago. I saved it for future reference because despite knowing that I have posted that exact pic before, people (somehow) don't see it.

ALL 1982-1992 Camaro & Firebird gas tanks physically interchange. The only differe is 2 things...The pump inside, or lack of on EARLY carb 3rd gens that might have had the block mounted pump, & the 1LE tanks with the baffles inside.

In fact...The 4th gen tanks are a physical fit too which are only "limited" by their fuel pump & fuel lines.

So if I wanted to do the 4th gen tank or ls tank.Will I need to change my harness, i have the 5.0 TBI.I know the ls tank has the evap system which will do me good in emissions test. But I still have unknown questions cause im not use to the 4th gens yet, post reliable sources or people also diagrams and such if possible, thanks for the help.

Sorry. Not to be callous or anything, but we aren't going to hold your hand & walk you through every little step. The info is very much here on TGO over & over. You just need to find it. If you can't find what you need, you probably shouldn't be tackling anymore than direct replacement stuff, since a LS-tank swap on a 3rd gen requires a good deal of plumbing "fixes" to the fuel lines as well as swapping to a lower PSI fuel pump for TBI. Plus the wiring for the fuel gauge, which is the biggest hurdle for most people (getting the LS fuel level sender to communicate with a 3rd gen gauge).

i know ive actually done it to my car haaa. but everyone that see it says its a hack job, but seriously it saved me SOOO much headache so i dont even care, just flop the carpet back over and it looks like nothing happened

Virtually none. The hard lines will have to be cut while the tank is still in the car to lift the pump assembly out. Or drop the tank to lift the pump assembly with the hard lines attached then cut.

I have dropped a tank out of a 3rd gen without dropping the whole rear, but it probably would have been quicker if I had. The filler neck goes through a pretty tight spot between body panels and you want all the room you can to maneuver the tank out.

If you have a lot of gas in the tank, you can drain it pretty quickly thanks to the fuel pump wiring to the ALDL port. You can kick on the pump with +12v and disconnect the feed line to the throttle body and pump it into a can from there. no long drawn out siphoning process from the filler neck
