Primer for Stripped (Bare) Mirror Housings?

I have stripped my mirror housings down to bare metal and I am about to prime them. My intention is epoxy primer on the bare metal but as a sanity check is there something I should use first. I ask because they appear to be "pot" metal.

yes, epoxy primer will work great. SPI is a great brand if you haven't picked it out yet.

Some brands of paint require self-etch primer even before epoxy. Check with your supplier as to their recommendations. I'd hate to see it all peel off.

I've never seen an epoxy that couldn't be applied to bare metal. that's the whole point of using epoxy

Check your TDS sheets. PPG says to use self-etch on bare metal with some of their epoxies.

Can't get your link to work. Never heard of your brand. PPG says to use self-etch on bare metal. Everyone has heard of PPG. You can spray whatever you want on bare metal. If you want it to stay and your reputable paint supplier to warranty their product you have to use it the way they recommend. How much is a can of self-etch and how long does it take to spray it first? Not to muchfor me for a little insurance.

Re: Primer for Stripped (Bare) Mirror Housings?

what a freaking idiot. Stop talking before you embarrass yourself anymore than you already have.

Seriously, advocating aerosol etch under epoxy?

seriously, not being able to open a PDF file?

Seriously, not knowing that epoxy INCLUDING PPG, is designed for bare metal? (as stated very clearly in the PPG pdf file I posted)

seriously, never heard of SPI?

please stop, you're giving a bad name to the internet

Re: Primer for Stripped (Bare) Mirror Housings?

Child, I said most brands, not all. Read before YOU put your foot in your mouth. Not wasting my time for some aerosal website with poor quality products. Pot metal has always been a problem with getting paint to stay on. Most older painters are familiar with this. For best adhesion self-etch has always been used on bare metal especially pot metal. Like I said you can spray whatever you want but for the time it takes for a coat of insurance, I'll keep using the etch prime first as per GM PPG and others recommendations. And no SPI gets no recommendations from Ford GM or Chrysler to my knowledge. I like the idea of a sign on the front of my business that people recognize. Now maybe you can find something else to do other than calling people you don't even know names and playing net popo.

Re: Primer for Stripped (Bare) Mirror Housings?

the link is to a PPG data sheet. read it, maybe you'll learn something

if you aren't famliar with SPI, it's your loss, best quality products out there. Better than PPG, Dupont, or any other "sign" brands

Re: Primer for Stripped (Bare) Mirror Housings?

If that's what's available for you that's fine. Never heard of it or a lot of other brands of paint out there. PPG will stand behind their product with a rep in the area, plus the DM for the paint store in my area is a friend of mine. MSDS sheet doesn't mention pot metal, only steel and galvenized (sp). Epoxies have gotten more etch properties through the years but I still stand by etch primer, even out of a rattle can. Especially pot metal, there's also no mention of lead. I've been painting for over 30 years. See cars that I've painted up to 20 years ago. Somethings you only learn with experience.

Some years ago a man was selling some miracle paint that dried in an hour. Could be put in the rain he said. We waited two hours and what a mess. Claims are easy, backing them up. . .

BTW Not my CPU, it's wife's new one and still set tight on security. I am smart enough not to mess with her stuff. Also got your link to work, one of the requirements is the use of self etch or acid wash(same results, different application).
