I never did like the raised wing that sat up off the trunk-hatch

Re: Poll: Do you like the 1991-92 Camaro Z28 Spoiler?

The term "spoiler" is often used interchangeably with "wing". An automotive wing is designed to generate down force as air passes around it, not simply disrupt existing airflow patterns as a Spoiler does. As such, rather than decreasing drag wings actually increase drag.
Anyway there is a tremendous difference between the way the two work BUT using the word spoiler unfortunatly seems to have encompassed both.Im kind of hoping that people will start to use there correct names. No disrespect meant but it looks to me that it’s a lack of "Knowing there is a difference" concerning this aspect of our cars...Oh well that's just an observation. Sorry guys.
With a cowl hood the High-Rise Wing does look OK. I prefer the short wing myself.

The 91-92 z28 spoiler looks great but only on a full 91-92 car setup. With IROC ground fx and louvers or even a cowl i think they look really odd. It's just become ingrained to me that the high rise spoiler is part of that 91-92 z28 package an that's the only thing that it looks right with. I know a bunch of guys who for some reason think it only looks good with cowls but I dont understand or agree with that at all. Cowls look almost universally terrible on these cars with a few exceptions that are tolerable. I see them as a function over form item.
This posts says pretty much everything I was thinking.

I definitely like the RS spoiler better.I would actually put an RS spoiler on any 91-92 Z if I ever own one.The high rise just screams import rice to me.

InfernalVortex ,
Quote ="That minispoiler is hideous".
If you don't mind please tell me what Mini Spoiler you’re talking about. Is it the "88" Short "Wing”? See this is why I mentioned distinguishing between the two? A Spoiler looks like a Duck tail and a Wing looks like a wing.

I agree that the short wing can look out of place to some but you really have to be standing by the car to appreciate it. The High Rise Wing was too much and the Duck Tail Spoiler was not enough so I went with this. A big decision considering paint was just around the corner. A lot of planning went into the car to get the look I wanted. It may not be for some of us but I love it on my car.
Anyway, that's off topic, sorry.

Love it! I love the high rise wing, the hood blisters, and the aero ground effects too! I love everything about the 91-92 Camaro Z28s. I have wanted one since I was 18. 16 years later I finally have one.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like that, and it looks like a spoiler from some other car was just thrown on.

If it did look like that, I imagine it would be an extremely popular item. It wouldn't be too hard to fab up either.

On topic, I do like the Z28 wing, it it looks a lot like an F40 wing.

Wow, you're right, I knew that owuld make it look better but that's an excellent photoshop job that proves how much better it would look like that. The hatch is a mounting problem, though. If you extended it out like that you'd probably have issues with it being stiff enough to stay in place since it's not being anchored on the outside edges.

And I agree about the F40 thing. The 91-92 spoiler is a great example of GM jumping on outlandish 80's styling trends right before they started shifting in a different direction. There were several cars with large high rise spoilers in the early 90s (RX-7's and Supras and MR2's and whatnot) and even more in the 80's... with the Lotus Espirit, Lamborghini Countach, Ferrari F40, and so on. It was definitely a late 80s trend. Probably started by the rise of high rise spoilers in Sports Car racing through the 80s.

And of course, this was the original inspiration for the 91-92 spoiler... but I think they tamed it down and had to add the two pylons to have a functional hatchback...

But looking at that you can see the F40 influence big time.

Nice job with the photo shop.
I agree that looks better.
Well I’m still happy with my decision considering what I had to choose from.
This is my first build ever and anyone that's anyone can see that Im putting my heart and sole into it.(started as a $500.00 wreck) and it really did not strike me that some people would "hate" that wing. As far as fabbing one up it never dawned on me besides I drew the line at a $ 3,000.00 paint job "completing" the exterior. Time to finish the interior.

I hate the wing on your car. I also think you have one of the nicest cars on the board. The fact that I hate the wing doesnt detract from the caliber of the car. It's easy to accommodate stylistic disagreements when the caliber of work is that nice. So dont take small things like that to heart.

That one I could live with but the one in the post before the F40 one it looks more like a F50 wing then a F40

InfernalVortex,
I have a lot of respect for you and value your opinions, insight and knowledge concerning these cars.
At the time I was so new at this that I did not even know what I was buying at a Pic n Pull. To me it looked like a really nice wing and I needed to replace a broken hatch so that was it. It was what I was looking for. Even came with limo tint. I joined this site shortly after that. Even after looking at what was available as far as wings/spoilers were concerned I still chose this one. Honestly I could not think of any reason I should not use it.
Custom high end paint sealed the deal. I will not second guess myself and stand by my decision. For me it’s not extreme like the High Rise Wing and adds more to the car than a Duck Tail Spoiler.
Thanks for the compliment less the wing.
Means a lot to me.
Not to bad for a DD

I completely agree with you, and made the exact same decision when I restoring mine. I could have went with the tall wing (had one in the shed) or the mine wing had one of those too.

What I didn't like about the taller wing was how it overlapped the deck lid by about half an inch on each side. It always seemed to me like it wasn't really made for it.

The mini wing to me is more tame and compliments the car more.
Never understood the hate on it, I think it looks good.

It does look a lot more like the F50 wing, but GM wasnt copying the F50 in 1988. Given contemporary examples, the F40 is probably the most relevant... Although it is rather uncanny how similar that one is the F50 wing...

Yeah I know they didnt copy GM the F50 didnt come out until 1995 and to me that wing looks great on the Ferrari F50 because the car is so aggressive overall

Just found this thread. I want to put this spoiler (the 91-92 hi-rise we're talking about) on my 88 GTA get rid of that dumb foam spoiler. Can anyone tell me what's involved to put it on a firebird? Any additional holes need to be drilled? I've searched the forum and couldn't find any install threads.

Firebirds are wider in the rear. The 91-92 camaro spoiler will not reach all the way to the edge of the decklid.

Gregs_GSXR I belive it is only available in Japan as no body has brought one over to the U.S. and copied it for production. If I knew where to get one in the states I would already have it on the car.

Hey what color is your car exactly for I am wanting to paint my 92 similar, undecided on the hood but I leaning torwards the iroc hood with the louvers

Re: Poll: Do you like the 1991-92 Camaro Z28 Spoiler?

How would you install the wing on a 1991 RS, since the wrap around spoiler has notch holes what would you have to do to cover the ones up on the quarter, an what about the hatch? I have an old teacher with this GORGEOUS spoiler laying around for like $50! Mint condition!! I'm gonna need it when I get my 1991 here in less than a month.
