General Lee tribute
OK, so I'm a fan of the Dukes, however, I don't think I'd be able to buy a 69 Charger in the anywhere near future (if ever) However, I also don't think that Thirdgens look great in orange unless they have racing stripes or something along those lines. Besides, I like the red and have only ever had red cars, so....
The General has inspired me to give the camaro a stock-car type look, and I do want some resemblance to it. So, Here's the plan. get a full set of z28 gfx, put the 01 on the doors, and get the American Racing Vector wheels. I don't think it would look right with the "bars and stars" on the roof; too much going on in the center of the car. So, get a flag front plate and replace the z28 gfx badges with some small flag decals; maybe one on the back bumper in the "engine size" location, and a blue stripe through the middle of the gfx around the car.
I personally like it, and when I get around to it I'm planning on it (may take a coupleb years, if I still have it by then, lol!) It's my car, after all, but I thought some of you might want to see a rough Idea of what I'm planning to do. It's just a "paint" project, but I think you'll get the idea.

Re: General Lee tribute
Like I said, I want the stock car look, so I'm only planning on taking attributes of the General that I think look good on it, hence the wheels and the numbers. I really don't think the roof would look right with the rebel flag up top, hence why it won't be there. The only reason it works on the Charger is that the roof is fairly long compared to the rest of the body, so it's proportional to a "top view" of the car, but a thirdgen's roof is so small by comparisson, so it would need something on the hood and deck lid to balance it out, and I don't want that much clutter.
Thanks jchaussee. I know to go "all out" would be WAY red neck, so I was trying to keep it somewhat tasteful. Don't think of it so much as a General Lee, but a General Wanna-Be.
A guy at works brother has an 86 berli v6 that they off road like they're the duke boys; not in the greatest cosmetic shape, and I think that's the only time I'd bust out the orange paint and flag. thankfully, they've kept his brother's flat-black...so far.

PS: I'm not trying to bash red necks; I am one, to a point. I just don't personally think anyone should go all out unless it's a charger or a beater you're just trying to have some fun with.

You're entitled to your opinion. I'm still up in the air about the flags on the gfx, but If I was that concerned about the image issues thirdgens have obtained, I prolly wouldn't have bought one in the first place.

Anyways, "We" aren't going to skip anything I want to do with my car, as long as it's "ME" who holds the title. The nice thing about paint is that it can always be changed down the line. Or not, if I never get bored with it.
It may only be a look accepted by a few, but if I'm one of those few, I guess I'll have to live with it.

I don't hate your idea of a stock car look but your barking up the wrong tree IMO.
It's just the wrong era
Instead you should build a Camaro with the Stock car look of the actual IROC car from back in the day.
Anyway, the whole Gen Lee thing is so over.
If your not sure though, maybe I'll ask John Schneider about what he thinks next time I see him, I'll let you know.

I also like the idea of off-road rally's, which is why I also like the old VW beetles. But, since I can't afford to have several toys with a designated purpose, I just wanna combine a little of everything to have something I'll enjoy romping around in during my down time.
Not trying to start an argument, just giving the reasoning for my madness. I don't want to give the car up if I don't have to, not after all the experience I've had working on it. I just want to make it more "me".

I still think it looks cool. Subtle enough, but people get general, no pun intended, idea. Hey I was thinking of painting mine like a corvette GS but will probaly get some flack for it, but hey, that is why it is my car.

Wow. Someone used a pic of my car to build a photoshop hack of a total mistake!
If you like the General Lee, then buy a Charger. Sorry, but this idea is ridiculous. The Camaro was never associated with the Dukes or the General Lee. It wouldn't be a tribute being that it's not even of the same brand!
I think I'm gonna buy a white thirdgen, put a ragtop sunroof in it and have a 53 decal on the hood and door with a red/white/blue stripe across the car as a Herbie tribute.

If you don't like it, then fine, that's your opinion; take it for what it is. I know thirdgens and the General Lee don't really have any association with each other, in fact, I know almost every argument which has been posted so far. Just didn't realize it would stir up this much fuss.
I knew it was a touchy subject, which is why I was TRYING to come up with something mid-way. I don't have a problem with people posting that it's not their thing, or whatever. Bashing it won't accomplish anything.
Again, I'm sorry for offending anyone; I don't agree with the way others may build their cars, but it's THEIR CAR, they can do what they want with it.

Normally I don't get involved with peoples arguments, but am I the only one who lookes at his image on the first post. All it is , is a number 1 and a few other small touches. Why is everbody getting their panties in a bunch. His flippen car, if he wanted to put camo on it and call it a GI joe tribute so be it. I don't like big rims, I think anything larger than 16s on a 80s car is stupid, but I don't bash the thousands with 17s or larger. In fact my favorite are the 85 15s that are on my z28. I think everybody should have them on their car

Re: General Lee tribute
BTW, I like that you're running a 327. Wouldn't mind getting one for mine some day; though maybe now I should build a 383; same recorded displacement as the General Lee used in the show.

Good for you. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. Looks like even Mopar guys don't share the same viewpoint on everything. Too bad, eh? What's wrong with people, having differing opinions like that?
Anyways, "We" aren't going to skip anything I want to do with my car, as long as it's "ME" who holds the title. The nice thing about paint is that it can always be changed down the line. Or not, if I never get bored with it.

A few weeks ago a WRX buddy of mine and I were talking about the crap people do to these thirdgens and how they look to the rest of the automotive community; no joke he told me, "All you need is someone with a big 01 on the side and a flag on the roof and you guys got it all."
Go figure.
Do what you like, but don't expect people to be lining up to park next to you at the local cruise in or car show. As you and I said, do what you like but don't get bent out of shape when 95% of the people you encounter say the exact same things that are being said here.

Re: General Lee tribute
Well, you posted an idea that is just bad, and makes zero sense; you should've expected that it wouldn't be well received.

Do what you like, but I certainly wouldn't be parking next to yours at a show.

Either way, "bad" is a relative term. Like I said, "tribute" was the wrong word to use, but I'm not great with words.
Now, I will point out, the wheels ARE late 70s thru mid-80s era, so that, I don't think, is entirely out of line. Heck, they used Grand National wheels on some of the later Lees. The only other thing that would stand out from a distance is the 01, which regardless of number, I would probably use a very similar styling because I personally think the font goes with the lines of the car.
And when it comes to car shows, let's just say I don't get out as much as I'd like; but at least I now know that you're one less person I have to worry about getting door-dings from.

Re: General Lee tribute
None taken. I prolly won't go through with this until I move into a more rural area, anyways, so I don't think so many will see it who aren't red necks themselves, so I don't think it will damage our rep too bad. Right now, I'm in the metro detroit area; I don't think any resemblance to the General Lee would be taken lightly; I wouldn't live to move into a more rural area.

The TV world is just that. They tried making a new Knight Rider using a Mustang. That didn't go over well either because the original was a Trans Am. Using my example above, if Hollywood came up with a new Herbie show with Lindsy Lohan and Herbie was a Chevrolet Cobalt or a even a Smart car, do you think it would be a success?

I've also considered downsizing the numbers and putting them toward the bottom of the door, like in the location that "IROC" would be on an IROC Camaro, maybe italicizing them to conform more to the shape of the door edge. This would also still allow me to use the side moldings down the center of the door like it has now.
Again, sorry about using your car. I seriously wouldn't have used it had I known it was a member's car, since I knew there would be at least some who wouldn't like it.

Sorry, but like I said in the first post, I've only ever owned red cars, so I'm not too willing to change the color. I guess when I say "stock car", I mean one which would be raced in a back-woods rally; maybe a cross between a derby car and a road-racing car. That's just what I like, I guess. I like to tear up dirt roads, drift around the turns, that kind of thing. Here's a more mild concept of what I was thinking.
