Repainting the T/A this winter...question about engine bay

Well this winter my girlfriend and I are planning on prepping the car for paint and doing the actual painting this next EARLY spring. We're doing a single stage white (same factory code white) with a different gray color on the bottom...thinking about using the "cyber gray metallic" that is used on a few GM cars, but where I fell in love with it is on the new ZR1 'Vette. We're going to do a base/clear on that color, and will be divided by a 1/4 to 1/2 inch red stripe decal over the hard line to prevent the clear from chipping.

Anyways, onto the question. I'm going with the factory color white so that we won't have to jam the car or repaint the engine bay. However, I do need to clean up the engine bay so it compliments the fresh exterior paint. The engine bay IS in excellent condition for it's age, but it needs a bit of hardcore cleaning in spots. The areas are circled on the following picture. Basically it's on the rear of the wheel wells and a bit of gunk on the firewall.

Now I've tried Castrol Super Clean as 100% strength (not diluted with water) and some came off, but it's stubborn ****! Does anyone have something else they suggest using? I also didn't use a pressure washer either, as I have no such device. Any other products and/or methods of deep-cleaning would greatly be appreciated. Thanks!
