92 Trans Am tail lights in a 92 Firebird

I have a 1992 Firebird and was wondering if it's possible to swap trans-am tail lights into it without much moodification. I like the gird lights much better then the stock firebird ones.

Re: 92 Trans Am tail lights in a 92 Firebird

They'll bolt right in, the big thing is that most of the grid lights have the delamination problem where the grid pulls away from the lense. Also the wiring harness for the tail lights is different, you'll need the harness from the donor car. It probably won't plug in and work unless it's the correct year either.

Re: 92 Trans Am tail lights in a 92 Firebird

Is there any other style of tail lights that would fit? Would you reccomend doing this switch in the first place? My tail lights are in perfect conditition now.

Re: 92 Trans Am tail lights in a 92 Firebird

Any Firebird lights should bolt up just fine. I wouldn't recommend the grid style just because of how so many of them are falling apart. Even a nice set will probably go bad on a long enough time line. Nice ones aren't cheap either.

i'm not a big fan of the stock 92 firebird lights though either. Any idea of different thirdgen taillights to give a good look?

Yes, it is very easy to do. You DON'T need to swap harnesses, but there is a little bit of rewiring required.

Here's a how to on what to do:

Re: 92 Trans Am tail lights in a 92 Firebird

So basically any thirdgen tail lights will fit into my bird without much of a problem if there's proper wiring?

Re: 92 Trans Am tail lights in a 92 Firebird

The tail light harnesses are stupid-easy to swap... It's one connector, and a couple rubber grommets to change them. If you've got the donor car's harness, you could probably unplug your old harness and plug the new one in before a soldering iron would be hot enough to melt solder.

I have a set on my 1991 Formula showcar and it was a drop in except for the end socket. Your main problem is that have been out of production for quite some time now and good sets are hard to find. Most of them also have the PONTIAC letters worn off. If you want to see what they look like, just look up my album or in the "GMHT magazine pictures wanted" section under detailing and appearance.

Re: 92 Trans Am tail lights in a 92 Firebird

The lights alone wil cost you $250+ IF you can even find some.

People think they are gold. I much prefer the 87-90 TA/GTA 3-piece lights. Much cheaper & easier to find too.

Whatever floats your boat, but the 1991-92 style was only for those years on the T/A and GTA and not that many were built to begin with, making them very hard to find in MINT shape and the last set I saw on eBay went for around $700.00.

I definatley think I'd go with the 87-90 lights too. But would those require the same swap process?

Wiring changes will depend on what car you start with & what year it is.

91/92 are closer to to the Camaro harnesses, 82-84 tail lights are different, 85-90 TA/GTA tail lights are different AND the 85-90 Firebird tail lights are different. And not just in appearances. I'm talking about bulbs, wiring & under the dash (for the 91/92s).

None of that is real hard to do though. Just a snip here & there on some & changing bulb sockets.

Re: 92 Trans Am tail lights in a 92 Firebird

I went with some 89 TA/GTA tail lights because i couldnt afford the 91-92. They are about the same w/o the huge price tag. I got mine for $30 on ebay. If i could find a decent set of 91-92 at a decent price id snag them. There were a few sets on ebay recently but people are either asking to much for ones in aweful shape or the nice ones are a couple hundred more than id spend. Some guy was e=selling a set with bad delamination for like $250 and said the price was fair (the delam was BAD). I even mad a reasonable offer and he got mad at me.

Re: 92 Trans Am tail lights in a 92 Firebird

Can anyone give specifics on what is needed to put 82-84 style trans am tail lights into a '91 firebird? As I understand it the 82-84 wiring harness is important to get.
