IROC clone

Thanks to someone else on this forum I just discovered that my 1985 Z28 is not an IROC, in spite of it having IROC-Z letters on the sides. I checked the RPO codes and everything else on the car checks out too, just a Z28. It has probably been at least 10 years since someone put the letters on this car though.

Now I am wondering where someone would have gotten these particular IROC-Z letters, since my car is not exactly a common color and I have never seen an actual IROC this color. The copper color on the letters match the factory copper paint perfectly. When I repaint it I don't think I will put IROC-Z back on since it isn't original, but now I'm really curious.

Anybody got any input on this or know what company sold these in this color? Did new or used dealers sometimes label Z28s with IROC-Z to increase their value?

Re: IROC clone

I dont think a dealer would label a car with a package that is does not have. Im sure the buyer would notice and if they did not but found out later like you did than thats fraud and the dealer could get in big trouble charging you for items never delivered. Most likely it was the PO and he put the decal on the car trying to be cool or just to increase the value so he could get more for it from a un-educated buyer. Im not saying your foolish for buying it but i hope you did not buy it for the sole reason that it was an IROC. In either case if you love the car and don't really care than don't worry about it

I don't really care that it isn't an IROC. I just picked it up because I liked it and wanted a replacement for my '87.

Re: IROC clone

I could tell thats not an IROC by a pretty good distance...first off, it doesn't have IROC wheels, it has the standard 15 inch Z28/RS wheels. Still a good looking Z28...but the wheels are the biggest give away. Also, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but...they never made 2 tone (meaning ground effects and body color) IROC's did they? It would have also had an "IROC Z" dash badge.

As for the IROC door decals, there are several aftermarket companies that make the door decals...in any color you want. Here is one of many sites that have them:

(Yes even in gold) so any average joe can stick them on. As for GM dealers, I highly doubt they could have gotten away with putting IROC decals on the doors of a standard Z28...just because there were quit a few differences in the 2 models.

Re: IROC clone

IIRC, the steering wheel on IROC's were also specific as was the 140mph gauge cluster. Maybe I'm wrong. The tail lights also look to be from a later model Camaro. BUT, this is a common swap that a lot of people do.

I really like the color scheme though and even if the colors were factory or not, I think it's very tastefully done. The IROC on the door kind of brings everything together to balance it out IMO, and its placement is correct for the year when I compare it to others in the White Book as the location does change.

You might also want to consult a couple of the other national boards like Iroczone.com and z28.com.

The clutches in your rear end could be shot. OR someone swapped that in.

iroc's came with them taillights from the factory, no need for swapping unless they wanted the older syle. and the 140mph cluster DOES come in SOME irocs. depends on year i beleive. for instance, my 86 has the 85mph cluster.
