Bumper cover repair

Hi,

Someone hit my car at the parking lot yesterday and the rear bumper cover has about 3 inches vertical crack now. As my car was parked at camera range I hope that I would find the culprit and insurance company would pay for the repair.

I have heard an urban legend, that those urethane bumper covers are pretty unrepairable, it would be very hard to get decent job. Is it true?

Has anybody any experiences getting that kind of damage fixed or do I really need a new bumper cover?

Re: Bumper cover repair

that is completely false. Its not the easiest thing in the world to perfect, but i got a complete trans am body kit from the junk yard, but the back bumper had a puncture which created a 2" hole. I found the piece that belonged in the hole, and with a rubber bumper repair kit and many hours of prep work, you cannot tell that the rear bumper has ever had a defect unless u look inside of the bumper.

ive also helped out a buddy with a ripped into two pieces front spoiler for his iroc. Got it back to better than new, still fully flexible and bendable, and repainted so again, u cannot tell it was damaged unless you look at the back side. Its rather easy to do, just create a valley to fill on the front and back side, fill it in with the flexible bumper repair kit, and then sand and prep the front side. You can get the kit at car quest.

Re: Bumper cover repair

I have a crack on my rear bumper too. I am going to get a kit and try repair myself. Rather spend $30 on materials than $100 for used bumper. I think most car places sell plastic repair kits. Here are some links.

I got my kit through Car Quest, although it had another name on it i believe, it did have in little letters that it was a BONDO product.

Re: Bumper cover repair

i used a bumper repair kit from napa to fix a nickle sized (almost completely round) break in my bumper. it was cheap and easy. i also used it to repair a couple of tears in the chin spoiler.. it looks as good as new.

Re: Bumper cover repair

I just put a new cover on mine and painted it. That was I know it's not going to develop any issues in the future.

I'd rather pay a few $$ to have piece of mind...but that's just me.
