Door pins, without spring compressor?

I just replaced the door pins with the Top Down Solutions greasable pins. Excellent kit, went together in an evening.
Put a step ladder over the door and used 2 rachet straps wrapped all the way around the door to take the weight and balance it. (2 required for balance) .. I uses a die grinder and crefully ground off the heads of the pins and replaced. Slick!

My problem! .. I used a crow bar to pop the door spring off but can't get it back in. I don't have a spring compressor and I'm just looking for anyone with a trick? .. I tried compressing in the vise and using strong wire to hold the spring but I can't get it compressed enough to go back in.

Anyone?

Re: Door pins, without spring compressor?

I didn't use a spring compressor either, but I did have another person to help. I set the spring in the 1st position and used a big pry bar to slide the other end of the spring down the door. The other person used a big screwdriver to steady and aim the end of the spring over the 'hump'. Since it was hard to get the spring over the hump, we used a small piece of metal that was the same height as the hump, which the spring would slide over. Then, when it was in position above the hump, we pulled the metal out and the spring snapped in place.

I was going at it the opposite to what you did. I'll give it a go after work. Thanks for the advice.

Re: Door pins, without spring compressor?

tried numerous things to get the spring in. Suffice it to say I had to get my father to pick a compressor up in the city for like $8 when he was up in order to do it. An $8 tool I'll likely only ever use once more lol. well worth it though!
