Re: How much does an Average paintjob cost?

As far as a paint job goes, It could run you from 3000$ to all the way to 10,000$. Depending on what kind of quality finish you would want. Run it by some shops in the area, and don't use one till you have seen what kind of work they have done. just check around for pricing in your area.

A base coat clear coat job with prep work would probably cost $4,000 on a Camaro / firebird if I had to give a guestamate based on some door dings, a few scratches, maybe a scuffed up front lip.

Hmm. I know Bowling Green has a couple places but other than that i dont' really know. I'm up in the Knox area so i know up here a lot better. Surely Clarksville or Hopkinsville has a place or two though

Re: How much does an Average paintjob cost?

I am in the process right now, paint and material alone are closing in on $2000. I had several shops who quoted a minimum of 10K. Rather scary.

Re: How much does an Average paintjob cost?

Average quote I got on mine was in the 2500-4000 area i don't know exactly what you're wanting but 10k sounds very expensive and that sounds like it's more than just a basic paint job

Yes the labor costs to dismantle and assemble can run up the costs.
Here are the doors removed and the jams being painted before new hinges and door seals.

Re: How much does an Average paintjob cost?

I am getting paint and body done on mine right now... I checked three shops around my area and all wanted ~$4.5k for fixing a few dents and a quality job. They didn't dismantle anything, so I could see where that might get really expensive.

Re: How much does an Average paintjob cost?

2k for paint and material? Paint will usually run around 500$ depending on what you get. i.e PPG over House of Kolor. It seems sorta high for materials. Is your paintjob a budget job or are you Spending on a show quality job?

Re: How much does an Average paintjob cost?

Mine was 2000 with only one small dent to fix. They did a PPG paint back to original color. I took the car apart and then took it to them. This included painting the jams with the doors on, they did have to remove the hatch to paint that channel. Car looks SO good.

Re: How much does an Average paintjob cost?

Well i came on assignment to Germany so this is gonna be a budget minded paint job. I can do most the labor myself...I just have no clue how to paint nor do i have a clean facility to try and learn. if i could keep the costs under 2 grand i feel i will have accomplioshed what i wanted.

Re: How much does an Average paintjob cost?

I would maybe ask around and find a local guy in his garage to paint. Having connections will bring your price down. I had my car painted(back in the day) by my dad's cousin who paints farm equipment. You may want to go to the auto parts stores and ask around.

I know 2 wyotech alumni(auto body graduates) who work at o'reilly's. The job market is tough and not everybody wants to work in the paint/body repair business when they could work elsewhere making more money. Or they just can't find a job in their field, i'm not sure exactly what there personal problems are.

I think a color change would be at least 1500 with connections

Do you have an Auto Hobby Shop or Auto Craft Center on base? If so, ask around there. Lot's of decent painters in the military; aircraft, vehicles, etc.

Hope this helps.

Re: How much does an Average paintjob cost?

I had my car painted last winter, I have a good friend who works at a deceny auto body shop and paid him very little labor and 300 dollars for using the owners shop.
I used the cheapest materials of any quality, I spent about 300-400 dollars just on sandpaper! Then all the little stuff broke me, to fix a small crack in the chin spoiler I had to buy a 45 dollar bottle of fuser. It was a basecoat clearcoat job, red with black stripes. We completely dismantled the car since we were changing colors.
Some of the little expenses that add up that you should consider are: remove the windshield and paint, then reinstall with new weatherstripping to avoid tape lines, New window belt moldings, these will look like crap with new paint, new emblems cause tape lines suck, new door weatherstripping if you are going to paint the jams, new clips to replace broken ar lost ones, and much more details.
I painted mine for about 3500, it was a rust free car with very little dents, but even one of these will need multiple skim coats in areas, any waves that you can not see now will show up hugely with new paint, especially a dark color.

I hate to say it but I don't think your bodyshop did you any great service. Every part that touches paint should have been removed to prevent peeling down the road. To pay that much for a complete without them disassembling anything seems really high. But you checked around and said it was the going rate for your area. I guess it is what it is.

Re: How much does an Average paintjob cost?

Yes,I agree that a quality paint job should have the car dismantled for the reasons stated above.

Re: How much does an Average paintjob cost?

It sounds like you are planning a color change. That can add a lot of labor to a third gen because of the body color under the hood. I don't think it could be done without pulling the engine. Nobody wants to open the hood and see the color that the car used to be. If cost is a major factor then keeping the original color will save you a bundle. Fresh paint will look great no matter what the original color.

Re: How much does an Average paintjob cost?

Yeah 3 grand is normal for a paint job you will be proud of.The 300 dollar specials you see always will peal off in a year or less. But remember paint is only as good as the body its on so body work is the key.

Re: How much does an Average paintjob cost?

Most will cringe at this, but I just had my 89' RS painted at Maaco for $1000. This included stripping the hood, roof, and tail, and fixing a dent. Obviously, they didn't tear the car down, but they did a decent job. And the paint they covered was their own. I had it done there 11 years ago. It held up pretty good. And Maine isn't known for great weather. (no winter salt tho). I do love the car. It's the only new car I have owned, but $4k for paint was out of my budget.

Re: How much does an Average paintjob cost?

Got mine painted 4 years ago.
they quoted 10k, but that shop was going to do a "show quality" paint job. Went to a country shop that a friend referred me to.
They did an awesome job (including prepping a fiberglass hood) and only charged $2,500.

I did the simple prep - pulled all lights, turn signals, the interior, etc... to cut the price by $500.

They did a good job in my view.

By the way, Air Assault!
