98 TA side mirrors on a 91Z

As the title states I mounted these mirrors on my 91Z and was wondering if any one wants me to do a wright up or am I just wasting my time?

I'd have to see them painted the same color as the body before I could decide if I liked it or not.

Re: 98 TA side mirrors on a 91Z

I don't mind typing up the details, was just wondering if anyone was interested before I typed it up. First I removed the two sets of mirrors from the two cars and found out that I didn't need the 4th gen metal triangle bracket that the mirrors bolt up to. After holding the mirror up to where I was going to mount it and building up the nerve I drilled the three holes.

Re: 98 TA side mirrors on a 91Z

Then I removed the mounting bracket that has the three studs from the mirror. Three phillip head screws and it is out. Turns out the studs are to short the way they are so either go buy some longer ones or use a set of vise grips, grab them each by the very tip (the part with no threads) and unsrew them out. flip em around and srew em back in.

Re: 98 TA side mirrors on a 91Z

Before I put the bracket back into the mirror I up it on the car and drilled the final hole for the wires. I made sure the hole was big enough for the connector on the end of the wires and mounted the mirrors to the car. As for the old holes that the original mirrors left, a buddy of mine knows body work so I'll get him to take care of them. And yes I agree that the mirrors need to match the car, but hey they do match the hood and nose.

Re: 98 TA side mirrors on a 91Z

So do the holes go all the way through to the interior of the car?

Re: 98 TA side mirrors on a 91Z

Yes the holes go through to the interior but since I'm in the progress of installing 4th gen door panels, they will cover one of the studs and I'll use the plastic triangle from the 4th gen to cover the other two.

Re: 98 TA side mirrors on a 91Z

I'd like to see some pics of what it looks like on the inside. I'm sure we can think of a hundred creative ways to cover up whatever is showing on the inside as a result of this mod. I kinda like the way they look.

Re: 98 TA side mirrors on a 91Z

You simply drilled the3 mounting holes? How flush does the mirror actually sit now?

This is why I ask......
http://s119.photobucket.com/albums/o...gen%20mirrors/

I notice you made no mention of the electrical plug on the controls...The plug is exactly the same, but the wires are arranged different, but can be re-pined. Up is up, down is down, but left is right & right is left.

I re-pinned mine, now left is left & right is right.

I actually used the 4th gen interior covers for the mounting studs, had to sand the bottom flat to sit on the top door trim evenly, otherwise it looks good! I used manual mirrors so it was easier for me.

Like Stephen I ground a groove into the area where the mirror mounts so it sits nice and flush.

Mines been on 11 months now (12-5-07) & it is still rock solid.

Took me awhile to find power ones though. I found manual ones all day long.

Re: 98 TA side mirrors on a 91Z

Hey Stephen your signature is where I got the idea to attempt this. Did a search but couldn't find anything posted and the pic in your sig has the 3rd gen mirrors so I figured that if I didn't like it I'd just get some replacement trangles from the jy and toss the 4th gem mirrors.

As for your questions, I didn't cut into the triangle to make them sit perfectly flush since it sits underneath the drip rail and I wasn't sure of the strength of the triangle. What did you use to do that?

I didn't mention the wiring yet because I was still working on that. I still had my original driver side door panel on with all the wiring hooked up and when I noticed the same plug on both mirrors I tested it out and found exactly what you stated. So in the process of mounting my 4th gen door panels and rewiring the switch I burned up my 4th gen mirror switch. So off to the jy I go on another day.

But right now I'm going to pick up a dash pad from a 98 I found that is being parted out. It is a bone stock v6/5speed but complete and the guy is parting it out because it was abandoned and he towed it off the property. PM me if I can pull something for anybody. He is selling the parts not giving them away, so what ever he charges plus shipping.

I got the idea from Redraif's car, here on TGO. I already had extratriangle pieces from another car, so worse case scenario, I swap them & I'm done. My sig pic is from before I did the mirror swap & only 1 weekend before I did the 4th gen rear wing swap.

I used my Dremel tool. I started with just the outline of the "bracket", but quickly discovered that wouldn't be enough & had to "dig" the whole center out. Not ALL the way through. Maybe 3/8" deep? The pics in my Photobucket show it all pretty good. The Maintenance guys in my apartment complex were like..WTF? There I am...Sitting in a chair beside my car, in the parking lot, extension cord running up to my apartment! LOL

I used my stock switches & just swapped the wires in the plug. The easy way woulda been to just cut & splice them, but I wanted it to "be" factory.

Re: 98 TA side mirrors on a 91Z

For the exposed bolts inside the car.... Those are actually studs screwed into a bracket attached to the mirror correct?

Why couldnt you mark the holes using the studs as a guide, then remove them, and on the inside, use some nice stainless or chrome or black button head bolts to bolt the mirror on. Like something with an allen or torx head.

I agree it would be easy to cover them...but just something I thought of. I never have a problem with exposed bolts as long as they are nice looking...

Yeah. I just used the big washers for more surface area grip & lock nuts to prevent anything loosing.

I didn't have the interior (from a 4th gen) covers when I did the install. I fact...I STILL haven't put the covers on!

The only thing that really bothered me was the inside side being white (on my car) and was too visible, so I painted the inner side, facing me, black to "hide" it.

Re: 98 TA side mirrors on a 91Z

you still haven't installed those covers!? :-p

I can't believe that you can install these w/out carving out the middle. That pisses me off. My dremel kept gumming up with melted plastic and the driver side is the only side i've gotten done so far cause it took me like 3 hours to carve it all out. The passenger side was only half done and i haven't gone back to it yet. Glad i still have a spare set of triangles....i think i'll have to see how this works out reversing the studs. Still can't believe thats all you did...GRRR! lol

What bit did you use on your Dremel? I used a rough grinding stone. I tried the metal "swirl" blade tip, but it kept gumming up. After switching to the stone, I had no more problems.

I just kept grinding, test fitting, grinding, test fitting...Over & over so as not to cut too deep.

Re: 98 TA side mirrors on a 91Z

yea i used the sideways drill bit for a little of that with the depth adjustor bracket. i used another bit, but i can't remember what it was, it's been since i sent you the 4th gen interior covers since i've touched it, lol.

The triangle feels very solid considering the amount that needed to be taken out, but i think i may re-do them so that i can leave the triangles solid.

I was pretty downhearted after I drilled the first set of holes and the studs didn't go all the way through. I didn't even think of digging out material from the triangle.

Seems that I'm the first to put these TA mirrors on a Z28. Oh well I like em!

Not the first... I did mine almost 2 years ago... and I got the idea from Redraif's car as well, and another member I cannot think of his name... and his was a Z28. Had the Hawks 5" spoiler, TA mirrors and the Cervini Ram Air hood. I do believe he sold the car awhile ago.

Found the car...
