RR Quarter Questions

Alright, I have a 91 vert. I picked up the attached 85 HDTP quarter, rear body panel, fenderwell to replace the rusted parts on mine.

I did take autobody classes many years ago in school, but got nothing close to this project. My father worked in a body shop back 35years ago. So were both out of skill on this. We would also have to pick up a wire welder. But how big of project am I looking at here in reality? Would it be worth it to just take to a shop and be done?

Does anyone have pictures of the vert spoilers after removed to show what they did to them.
How about replacing the fenderwell?

Any insight as to what I might get myself into would be helpful.

Re: RR Quarter Questions

hmm wow your getting yourself into alot. It will be tough to do all that alone by yourselfs but can be done.. It would probaly be easier to cut out the rusted pieces on your car and cut them out of the donor piece to get rid of the rust, use a strong rust inhibitor and cover it up.

If you took it to a shop, It would cost you a fortune for them to fab it up and repaint it so..

Re: RR Quarter Questions

Ive called a couple shops. Some wont quote w/o seeing the project(understandable). But so far over the phone is 1g... painted. Which I will gut the car and paint it myself. Ive painted over half the car as-is now.

Looking at welders, they cost about 600. So I'm still kinda undecided.

Re: RR Quarter Questions

You are looking at a big job and coming from a novice welder, its a tough job if you are not experrienced. Welding a floor or a something in an area that isnt seen is easy but a body panel, either it has to be perfect or your looking at alot of bondo and headaches. How big are your rust spots? I would cut and piece small pieces in unless your quarter looks like this. Notice how the quarter, wheel lip and everything is shot...

and you want to do this:

I may have gone a little to deep here but the car was shot anyhow so...

Good luck...

Re: RR Quarter Questions

actually, I'll be cutting out more then that.

How bad are the spots....

spot1.. Is the fender lip, about 6" of it is gone, and started its way into the fenderwell.
spot2. Is in the fenderwell, down by the where the lca bolts to. I can stick 3 fingers into it.
spot3. In the fenderwell, its where they weld some of the vert bracing to. I can stick a pencil thru it.
spot(s)4. Bumper mount. I only have 1 of 8 bolts holding strong.
spot(s)5. Behind the rear gfx, many spots pencil lead size.
spot6. Behind the side gfx, but still on the rear quarter. 1 pencil lead size.

So what most of you are saying, since Ive not tackled a job of this nature, send it to the "pros"?

Re: RR Quarter Questions

it almost sounds like you have some REALLY bad rust issues.. If I were you, I would keep getting quotes but a shop is gonna charge out of the *** for it.. you could try to tackle it and if you start stripping it down and see too much rust to fix, you may have to try and find another donor car body.. :-/

If its just in some spots then you may be lucky and get away with it.
Got any pictures of the places?

and jrhaus nice 67, how long did it take you to do that?

Call me George Washington or whoever said it but I can not tell a lie... It appears that I was trying to pass off the last pic as my car but truth be told I found that pic on the intenet right before I bought my car in October of 2007 in the condition in the first picture (thats really my car). The other pics show the progress i have made thus far. I have completed the engine, subframe, front brakes, transmission...etc. It is ready to bolt back up. I have moved to the bodywork...

I appologize for seeming like "that guy" that fakes his car but that was not the intent but more of my hopes and dreams of what the car will be some day. My current progress is the last pic, before the completed car. That is how it sits today. I have been working on and off for a year. Time and money are hard to come by these days... mostly time but I am looking at a 170 year old farm house with 117 acres right now so the car is on temporary hold... plus I may switch and work on the IROC since it is WAY less work. Really just paint, new weather strip and a few interior plastic pieces to be back to new.

Sorry for the confusion... and the completed car is beautiful isn't it?

Re: RR Quarter Questions

Sony, I have already had the car gutted before. So I know what all I have and where.

I have a few pin holes on the left fender. Left floorboard is starting to. Rest is all good. I figure if I get this done, it will take care of most the car. I knew this would not be a cheap or easy project. So far, I got the "fender" for half of what I expected.

If this isnt salvageable, I'm moving onto vettes.
