Re: Installing trans am rocker panels?

there should be a metal bracket that runs the length of the rocker that need to be welded to the car, then the plastic part attaches. then there are holes that need top be drilled in the fender and quarter for the lower plastic piece.

yeh, i know that much, but the panels are 20 years old, and the brackets may be bent, i've never seen em before, or know how. there isnt a trans am i can look at in town and know.

i need pics, if anything, or i may make a very big mistake tomorrow.

Re: Installing trans am rocker panels?

Time for you to improvise and innovate. I had the same problem and here is what you can do.

What I did was to use some curtain brackets and thresholds for doorways. Screwed the curtain brackets on where the holes for the GFX meet and put the thresholds on top of them fastened by some small nuts and bolts. I put them roughly about a 1/4" below the level of the door to give the GFX enough room to clear the door. Buy yourself some 3M double-sided tape (the kind for GFX) and stick the front and back of them to the car. Remember that the rear part of the GFX screws into the car so that one will be just fine. The front you can always screw down also if you invent.

I took those same curtain brackets and flatened a couple out. Screwed one side to the GFX and the other side to the car. Yes, they were all straight and sturdy. If you could've got a good set of the original spot-welded brackets then you are in business. You can use some self-threading screws to put them back onto the car. Screw welding. Of course, you can devise your own way.

Re: Installing trans am rocker panels?

im not sure if your weldind these in? i do hope you are because there really is no strength without welding. Regardless, Line the new rocker up and drill holes every say a ft and pop rivet the rocker in place for alignment. After that tack weld it. Remove the rivits and weld the holes shut. Thats how i would do it to make sure its lined up. also you can find out exactly where the original spot welds were when you take off the old rocker. Make it, check it and check it again and then drill it. Check twice drill once!

hope this helps

Re: Installing trans am rocker panels?

that does help, but my probelm is, is that i dont know where the bracket actually goes, cause im fairly sure the guy bent it when her packaged it, and rocker panel itself is a little warped, so i dont know where or how it goes onto the side of my car exactly, like if it overlaps the body, or goes flush, or if i have it upside down :S
