Door window weather stripping - front corner

Search isn't working, please excuse if a common question (I don't get into this forum very often).

I just received the "door felt filler weatherstrip" from Classic to fix the leak at the front of the door window that I've had since I've had the car. Looking at the stock piece, it doesn't seem to want to move, while the replacement looks like it just slides into a channel in the front plastic corner piece. Is it supposed to be glued in there?

I'm replacing the outer door handle this evening (third time in 8 years, this time with a "genuine GM" handle), would like to "handle" this at the same time.

Thanks.

Re: Door weather stripping - front corner

Do you have a pic, are you talking about the window sweeps or another piece?

www.classicindustries.com search on p/n 20598023.

Sorry, that's about the best I can do. Think of the part upright, sitting at the front of the window glass, the part that seals the front part of the door the to bottom part of the window weatherstrip.

Well, trying again.

The part boxed in red. View from inside, door open.

This one is obviously in bad shape, I tried putting some universal weather strip on to keep the whistling down.

The new one.

I boxed the "channel" part in red.

NM, I got bold and went out with a screwdriver and channel lock. There is some sealant/adhesive at the top, came loose fairly easily. I'll use some black silicone when it goes back together. Would be better done with the door panel off, but. . .

Pics to follow shortly, if you're interested.

Well, even if you aren't interested, here it is with the old one removed and the new one installed.

The passenger side was in much better shape (that door came from the donor car in 1999). Still pliable, but pulled up easily, so I put some silicone under it and put it back in.

Re: Door weather stripping - front corner

those are the old ( bad ) design. Yours will probably be fine with the replacements, but somewhere towards the end of the run.. 89 /90 maybe? they switched to a one piece design which seals much better.

You may want to make some adjustments to the window to get the best seal.
That harder plastic part of the triangle seal bolts on to the door behind the panel. The tech articles have some window adjusment ones, but as I recall there are a few adjustable points that were overlooked, the triangle seal being one. I spent a day playing with the drivers door on mine and got it to seal nicely with no leaks or air sounds at cruising speed.

It is now quieter than it has been in the last 8 years. Haven't run it through a car wash yet to check the seal.

Got the door handle replaced last night as well. The whole thing is much happier now.

Thanks for the feedback.

Re: Door weather stripping - front corner

Bringing this back for a new issue. My driver side door had been backed into back in the early 2000's (before I started this thread), and the repair lasted for awhile. But salt eventually got under the bondo that was used in the repair, and the outer shell rusted through. This door was still the original 1982 door.

I picked up a door locally in much better shape from an '85, and started the replacement process this weekend. The "new" door was manual window and lock, while the '82 had power both, so I'm transferring the power stuff over.

The "new" door was also missing the corner filler and front window channel. I didn't think that was a big deal, as I could just transfer them over from the '82 door. But, that doesn't appear to be the case. The '82 corner filler bolted to a bracket behind it that was spot welded inside the top of the door. The '85 door doesn't have anything like that. I suspect the design changed between '82 & '85, but a search didn't give me any hints.

So, if you more knowledgeable types than me could confirm, I'd appreciate it. I also looked for the corner filler in Classic Industries, and all I came up with was the rubber weatherstrip that I replaced in the first part of this thread.

And, if someone has a driver door corner filler that would fit this door available for sale, that would be peachie...

I'm getting new door lock cylinders (mine were already honked up before I started this door replacement project), and the corner filler weatherstrip while I'm at it. Figured no time like the present...
