Firebird Fender Difference?

Firebird Fender Difference?

Ok, I probably should know this since I own an '84 (now wrecked thanks to Russel braided brake hoses :'( ) and a '92 that I just got.....but I don't.


Are there any MAJOR differences between the '82-'84 Trans Am fenders and the '85-'90 Trans Am fenders? Reason I ask is that I'm putting the earlier style fenders (with the "air extractor") on my '92. I've got a left side one on the way off an '88, but I can't seem to find a right side one for '85-'90. There's an eBay store that has TONS of left hand '85-'90 ones and TONS of right hand '82-'84 ones. Looking at the pics, it looks like the only difference is the holes for GFX mounting? So what's to stop me from using one of the right hand '82-'84 pieces on my car?

Sorry, I feel like this is kind of a dumb question, but I want to make sure before I go buy one of these things and then have it not work!

I know I was just reading a post where someone mentioned the rarity of '82-'84 fenders, GFX, etc. Makes me even sadder that I lost my '84 But she's still kicking around...maybe I'll fix her someday...

You nailed it on the head, the holes for the ground FX are the only real difference in the fenders.
I have a original 82 fender on my passenger side, and a 85-90 repro on my driver side. other than the holes for the ground FX they are identical.

All you need to do is take care of the holes and you're set.

Excellent! I was hoping that was all it was, guess I can grab one of those right hand ones off eBay! Hopefully they fit better than the aftermarket fenders I got for my '69 GTO when I had that! They never fit right, that was a nightmare!!

Yeah, shipping does stink, but at least they're available! Turns out I MIGHT be able to get the other one off the car I've already bought the left one from. I'll know in the next day or so!!

Thanks for noticing my car Jeremy! It's nice to know that my efforts and work on her have been noticed by someone on this board! Like I said, I may bring her back to life someday, but most likely as a track car, since the firewall/cowl is damaged enough that it would be pretty hard to get everything straight enough for it to be an enjoyable street car.

Here are a few pics of her though:


Strut tower is pushed over pretty well, this is the worst side. The other side took a hit too, but it didn't hurt the structure as much.

The culprit Russel brake hose. It failed at a crimp (you can see the break and frayed braid above the crimp on the bracket next to the strut)

So, there's my sad story...the '92 is getting Ed Miller's C5/6 brakes with EARL'S hoses!!!!

wow, it's very sad to see it in that kind of shape. are you makeing the '92 an '84 look-alike, or keeping it a 92 look? One thing that's nice about the later 3rd gens is several extra braces they added to the cars. There are even two more mounting points for the dash assembly to reduce rattles and help prevent the plastic mounts from breaking. I've been trying to add some of the upgrades to my '84 as I go along.

I'm going to keep the '92 look. I had a hard time deciding what nose I wanted to go with. I ended up deciding on the '92 because I don't see them ALL that often, and I think it will look good with the direction I'm taking the exterior of the car. I've always had mixed feelings about the "banshee" cars, but the more I've looked at mine the more it's grown on me.

I can certainly attest to the added rigidity of the later 3rd gens. What little bit I drove the '92 before I tore it apart it was a MUCH tighter and quieter car than the '84 was, even though it's a t-top car AND had some rust issues in the floor (just finished fixing most of them tonight, actually! I'll try to post up a thread about the re-incarnation project one of these days soon, rather than taking this one off topic I guess :P

I'll always have a soft spot for the early birds for sure!!!!!
