Sell, Restore or Part out
I recently picked up an 87 Formula 350, And I am not sure what I want to do with it now that I own it.
The Good: A numbers matching real Formula 350, it runs great, no smoke on startup, pretty quick for all stock and the Trans shifts the way it should. The body is very solid, no rust holes on floor pans or in the body. Numbers matching Body Panels and Engine. The engine & trans are recently rebuilt. Everything appears to work except the hatch pulldown.
The Bad: 130,000 miles on body, Torn Drivers seat, Door dings, Scratched paint, wrong spoiler, older re-paint, some minor rusty spots (NO HOLES). Paint flaking off of bumpers.
The car is an easy rebuild if someone wanted to dedicate some time to it, but because of the miles I would not get out of it what I think tis worth.
Because I would have more into buying the parts back to upgrade & fix my other two cars and one car to a 350, and because it has the same color Gray interior as one of my other project cars I can use some of the parts from it to make the other 2 cars even better...
Here is my delemma, On the one hand the car is worth between 2,500 and 3000 to me just for the parts I can get from it. In todays market the car is probably not worth that much to most people, but in order to buy the parts it has for my other projects it may not be worth it to sell it, but part it out and take what I need.
What would you do, I am looking to see from another point of view, and possibly someone has an idea that I have not thought of...

I think you should ask 500 to 1000 over what you paid for it. If you don't get any bites within the amount of time you can afford keep it and then sell the parts you don't need and keep the parts you can use on your other cars.

That car is in pretty good shape for a 87 350.....I'd hate to see you part it out. The gray intior is common and should be easy to get. I'd say fix the major problems with the least amount of money and the see how much you can sell it for.

I have honestly thought of that. I checked on paint for it and I could re-paint it myself for about $500 in materials, and have it looking pretty good, Get the decal kit for about $135 to finish it off... But Would I get the extra $635 out of it that I put into it PLUS my time and effort... Would it really be worth it. By the time I got done I would probably want to show it at the T/A nats...
The car is one of those boarderline things that I could go either way with. I hate parting out a perfectly good Formula 350... To the right person I think could Get $2800, but they have to want a Formula, and not a Camaro or T/A. With that said, most people want the extra ground effects crap to slow themselves down and eat more gas

the picks look real nice, and with regular maintnence the motor could pobably last you quite a while and as far as the interior goes if you have a local junk yard (prefferably a u-pull -it yard) you can get em real cheap. ive been to a one near whare i live and ive seen tons of grey interiors.

Nope - don't junk it.
I paid $1800 for an 88 IROC (350 TPI) 4 years ago and have been sorting out problems since, but I still love it. 128,000 on the odometer when i got it - but given everything else I've found wouldn't be surprised if they had rolled it back some. Motor's STILL strong (leaks a little oil!) and runs great.
These 350 TPI cars come up for sale infrequently. I've had guys pull up next to me at street lights and ask if I was looking to sell (I live in Los Angeles, for what's thats worth). I don't know if you've ever read anything on CraigsList (www.craigslist.com) but I've been watching for 8 months and have yet to see a 350 TPI car come up in the Los Angeles area.
Lot of 305's out there (and I'm not busting on them) but definitely don't strip out a 350 car - there's a couple million of the 4banger, v6's and 305's if someone wants/needs parts - I would second the U-Pull-It yards. At least here in LA the second gens have become almost non-existent in the wrecking yards - but the thirdgens, well you can't hardly walk a row without looking at 2 or 3 of them (granted, mostly low end cars, but depending on your needed parts...!!!)
Just my $0.02

I am starting to lean toward restoring it, taking it to the T/A nats and try to win my class...
But a 350 or 383 in my yellow one sounds delicious. yummmmm...

A new paint job and a seat is all it needs, no big deal.

Engine: a slow one

I'd pick every part that I needed for my other cars.
Then I'd replace the parts I stripped with either junkyard parts or the parts that they replaced on my other car. Motor, tranny, interior pieces, whatever it be...
Then I'd sell it for a grand (maybe more, depends on what condition the replacement parts are though) or use it for my daily driver that I can eat and smoke and drive in the muddy *** rain in.
