On the cars that came stock with driving lights/fog lights in the grill insert, I wanted to know what size the lights are. Are they fog lights or are they driving lights? What was the wattage?

Any amplifying info will be appreciated!

What I want to know, in case I confused anyone is this:

Camaro grill insert (IROC & Z28) the black grill piece that replaces the stock traditional looking grill on RS's and plain jane Camaro's. This is the piece with either the red bowtie or silver lettered "Camaro". The lights that are in THAT grill insert!

1) Fog lights; or
2) Driving lights?

3) What is their size, ie, 5" x 9"?

If some one would please step-up and volunteer some information, I would be grateful.

Well since no replies..
I think the factory lights are ugly. They are too big and like most factory fog/driving lights they suck.
I purchased the Z28 grill from Chevy and mounted PIAA 1500XT driving lights. These lights were around $200 but worth it. They are just about as bright as my H4 headlights, but the beam pattern has a very sharp cut off as to not blind others. The lenses are glass and sealed very well. They've been on for many years without any condesation. Most of the cheap aftermarket autozone apc type lights I've seen are garbage. I would go with quality Hella or Piaa driving lights. There is more driving than fog, so I would go with a driving type.

I am sure that the factory lights are not "cool" and are probably highly inefficient compared to after market specialists.

I have the RS grill. I want the IROC/Z28 grill. I want to fill those holes with a driving light, just like they came from the factory.

But, I want to know what size are those lamps from the factory, so I have something to compare against (size-wise) when looking for aftermarket lamps.

Just some info, please! But, thank you for replying anyway. It is appreciated.

go to your local parts shop (autozone, advance, ect.) or even walmart- look for the fog lights- i got a set of Blazer OEM series fog lights- they look pretty damn close to the origional thing- most people cant even tell they are a set of 20$ lights made my RS look ALOT better.

Thats what I did on my old RS, and it did clean up the front end alot.

Ditto here. My old original fog lights were rusted out bad and one had a lens cracked. The $20 Blazer lights were near identical looking to the stock ones. Just had to cut ends off the wiring and tie into new lights.

Sorry to wake up an older thread.
The cut-out size for the fog lights is 4"x8" but the fog light is mounted on the bumper bracket behind the cut-out. So you can put any size fog light in there that would fit on the bumper.

I agree with going aftermarket, mainly for the selection and also price. I do not think paying $80+ for each OEM light is reasonable. But that's just my opinion.

I've been looking at fog lights for some time and so far the best fitting lights I saw were 6-1/2"x4" Cyber White (by Navigator). The rest of aftermarket fog lights are smaller (4"x2" or 3"x1") and that would leave ugly gaps in the cut-outs. I found some German 4"x8" lights but will have to look at the bumper tonight to make sure they will fit before I can purchase them. Sure would be nice to have perfectly fitting aftermarket lights on the car! Will keep y'all updated.

Factory lights vs the Blazer $20 lights. To get the better lens you need the actual yellow fog lights and switch lens with the clear driving lights. The yellow is in the reflector. Couldn't afford both sets myself but might change them someday. Factory lights here:

.......reviving old threads. Thats okay, because this project is ongoing for me. I have all of my parts now, just that the weather is cold, wet, and rainy up here in Maine.

I have after market driving lights (5.5"x3") w/blue crystal lenses. Factory fog light brackets, fog light switch, and aftermarket harness, factory grill w/"CAMARO" in silver.

I will post a pic after I get it done, weather permitting!

Found some 4"x8" fog lights on eBay, new ... for $25, not too shabby. Will be buying them now and try to install them within a month or so. They will fit perfectly and not leave any ugly gaps.

Might keep in mind that a lot of these cars draw intake air from the grille openings around the fog lights, have ducts up to the filters. Probably not a big deal but something to look at. The aftermarket lights look decent on the car for not much money. Picture of mine on car:

Sorry for bringing up an old thread but are those lights in that picture mounted on brackets?

Because I wanted to know if anybody has any ideas as to how I could bolt on the blazer lights seeing as how my car did not come with fog lights originally.

I just mounted these lights on the plastic grille piece, drilled a hole for the stud on the light bracket. These lights are pretty lightweight, no vibration or shaking that I can notice.

Thanks for the tip. I did the same thing with the blazer lights to my car and it came out looking 100% stock.

A buddy of mine at work who actually does know alot about 3rd gens commented "why did you spend over $300 to get those put in"? When I told him about the blazer lights, he almost crapped himself because he did an all GM conversion on his old 92 RS and it cost him over $300.

I used the fog lamps they used to put on the old AMC eagles and spirits. I like the fact that they come with plastic covers to protect the lenses when not in use

There are some very distinct differences between the factory lights and the blazer aftermarket lights...


1. The factory lense is built on an angle in relation to the housing. In order to install the blazer lights and make them look right, the housings have to be pointed "crooked".

2. The mounting system for the blazers is completely different. You can fabricate your own brackets... but it isn't as clean as the factory setup.


From 20 feet away.. maybe they look identical.. but anyone who knows what they are supposed to look like will notice right away.

I agree. But it depends on each owner what they prefer. Stock look from close up for lots of moolah or stock look from distance for much less. And who will be able to tell if they are stock fog lights or not? Only us!!

They look stock to everybody else, especially at night.

I just couldn't see spending $300+ for all the hardware just to say "it's stock man".

Don't get me wrong... there is nothing wrong with saving some money on the aftermarket ones... I just kept seeing people posting that they "look 100% stock".. etc... and they really are not the same at all other than the general shape.

The foglights on my '91 don't light up. I turned on the switch, and the light on the switch lights up, but my foglights don't light up. I wonder if it is burned out bulbs or a connection problem, because I really want them to work.
