I'd like to see some of the totally custom stuff done to our cars. My two favorite things I've done is install an original Nintendo system, and custom 8 bulb Sequential taillights.

Most of my original custom work has to do with making new wiring connectors for when the old plastic ones crumble in my hand!

these cars are done so often by so many people that the ability to find true "custom" work is very difficult to find. You can sometimes come up w/ creative work, and other times, come up with custom work, but more likely than not, it's been done time and time again by now. Someone on here has alluminum bezel rings arounds their guages in a firebird, along w/ an aluminum overlay (which was all customed) and is awesome, probalby the only one i've seen on the boards. Red-Raif has a lot of "custom" components on her car actually, from the exhaust design, to her use of spoilers, and even the backlit instruments, some really neat stuff. Your best bet would be to look for the people who "pioneered" the way, the ones who were first w/ ls1 swaps before people knew it could be swapped, the first t-56 swap the same, before hawks made conversion kits. The 1st guy to do an independent rear suspension on a 3rd gen, person who chopped up an SS hoodscoop and molded it onto their camaro before ASCD did it the mass producing way.
By now, many of the ideas have been seen, there will be new ones, and the old ones will still always be impressive.and as long as people have the ability to dream, they'll be coming up with new ideas on how to do a new problem....
i've got the creative idea of a northstarred 3rd gen....it's possible, and i've seen one northstarred 4th gen. Lots and lots of work, but to be on the list of the pioneers, think it'd be worth it.

I think the only thing on my car that could be "pioneered" is the motor. I'd post pics, but it really doesn't belong here you can check out my webpage it my sig.

little custom crap most people dont notice:
- i have a 91, but the tonneu cover release is on the cover itself.... letting me release the cover with one hand easily.
- i have a convertible, but i have a elec trunk release
- pushing ANYWHERE on my "airbag" wheel makes the horn go off.. not just the two "buttons" that i could never find to hit.
- i have a dent in my airbag wheel from the palm of my hand. see above.
- i have a little light in the mirror that lights up the shifter area... like a C5 corvette.
- my speedo gauge goes to 230. (115 gauge x 2) basicly i cut the pulses in half, and then use a custom face
- my shift light is built into the dash like its a stock gauge
- in my 82, the amp is where the ECM usually is... in my 91, its on the back "wall" of where the tank is
- i have a small black button on the side of the dash, between the dash and the door. it used to be for my reverse lockout on the T56.. now... its somthing else
- my gas pedal is tweeked to be closer to the brake.. now i can "heel-toe" with the edges of my feet.. more accurate for me.
- my car was a auto. the only way you can tell is either the RPOs or the automatic style key release on the column.
- im running a totally stock 4thgen suspension.. stock 4thgen LCAs, stock 4thgen panhard, stock 4thgen rear, ect
- my Kmember allows me to bolt in a LS1 OR a SBC.
- my car weighs 3015lbs... and i havent taken the rear bumper, stereo, carpet, ect out... it should be sub 2000 when im done.. and still have all thoes things

the numbers are too close together.. what im working on now is a much better idea.. by taking the signal and dividing it by a diffrent number, i can make diffrent output ratios... then just make a gauge to match. im probly going to go with dividing by 1.73... to change my 115mph speedo into 200 even. i think the 30mph less will clear it up better.

Stuff I haven't seen anyone else with...
hatch switch relocated to defrost spot because I have a mech. oil pressure gauge where people usually put it onthe 97+ console:
Put 6-cluster LEDs (people that I've seen do it use the less bright LEDs, not nearly as bright) in the turn signals, and idiot lights...blinkers are like shift lights now.. its crazy. ...and hooked up a fan switch to an LED letting me know my fans are getting power and on. Drilled out a screw hole in the gauge cluster and mounted it in there, fits like a glove:
Maybe some tail light action sometime in the future if I ever get some time away from school, full time job, and reroofing our buildings.... bleh.

I put bluedots onto my third brakelight on my 1989 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans Am!
So, at night, they light up purpleish!
I had an extra lens, and since they have 2 round sections in the lens, I just dremeled them out to install the bluedots!
I had lucked out, and found a set of bluedots with gold metal edges, so the gold matched the gold on the car!
I always carry the original lens in case I am stopped!
Now, to take a picture!

...This is the 2nd day (hour.. the next day) of work. After this, it was painted.
I did this because I like the shifter to be curled back some, it gives it a little more of that old muclecar feel. I also changed the thread to 1/2"-20, so it can use any shifter **** you can imagine. Worked great!

Around here my thirdgen stands out just because it's a clean, straight, rust-free thirdgen.
But, in terms of actual "custom" work that no other car has, I guess my audio system would qualify. I tried hard to build an LCD video system that looked like it could have been a factory option in 85 if they had that sort of thing back then. Anybody can slap together a fiberglass mold and paint it to match their exterior, but it takes a lot more work to make something look stock.
This year I need to finish the dvd trim ring. I'm going to cut up my last spare dashboard so that I can use the actual OEM plastic instead of the ABS like what's there now. This will tone down the ridiculously bright camera flash reflection in pictures, plus it'll just tie everything in together better. I'm going to route a little edge into it, just like the OEM stuff used too. It should tie it in nicely.

That's similar to what I did on my bird. The leather on the sides of the screen hide magnets so I can mount my dashpocket back and no one knows it's there.

Thanks, Mr. Dude! I actually get a compliment on it every once in a while.
If interested, check out BLUETPI's stuff. He's got a web page http://members.aol.com/BlueTPI/3rdGen.html with samples.
Does a nice BowTie as well. Tell him the 383 guy sent ya!

One of the first LT1 swaps on the board, definitely the only one in town.
Other than that, nothing too spectacular, other than its a clean 3rd gen, of which there are none in my area.

Hardest part of any of it is putting the trim bezels in a blender and fiberglassing them back together and still make them screw on like OEM (making all the other crap a reversable bolt in/out deal in case you change your mind isn't exactly easy either I guess, too).

I'd have to say the hood since it was "made" from scratch. Like it, hate it, alot better than my old hole in the hood for clearance and I've never seen another like it anywhere ever!!
BTW, OLD picture from '03 ET Finals in Cordova, but it's a pretty good picture of the hood.

I have plans to make 2 notches in the bottom of the rear GFX so i can put tips on it that dont look like they hang stupidly low. Am still looking to find a way to get custom actual hood louvers to replace the black fake ones on the irocs.
Also when i get the chance am going to basically gut the interior, tear the carpet out and by the front seats put in that diamond plate crap. Not sure what i can do yet about the headliner because im pretty sure the a pillar would look like *** without the plastic covers on it. Back seats are already removed. Cage will go in as funds come in.
If the car ever gets done the way i would like, the car will get basically back halved, minitubs for bigger wheels, fuel cell moved to the trunk, and cut the sheet metal out from where the trunk was as well as part of the floor behind the front seats to route big exhaust easily up over the axels.
As for now all i have done is this bit of custom front end stuff (its hard to see)
.
The middle section has been cut out as well as the plastic used for mounting the turn signals. The middle section is going to be made into a giant ram air scoop, and the turn signal area (and where those go inward has been painted matt black) will be routed for air cooled front brakes.
The paint doesnt match too well on the new bumper cover and i didnt have the proper tools when preparing the actual cover and am not happy with it so when the car eventually gets a repaint i will buy a new cover and with the experience i now have will do it properly.
