I was wondering if anyone had put in some sort of cupholder(s) in their Camaro. I have a 1990 and would like to put one in. Can I pick one up somewhere online thats sturdy and bolts in or what. Pics would be helpful too. Thanks.

GM had a reason for no cupholders, you don't drive a performance car with a drink in you r hands.

if you dont have cupholders, then you have the drink in your hands




btw, a true performance car should also have:

no power windows
no power locks
no power mirrors
no AM/FM/CD stereo
no AC
room for a decient exhaust system

i could go on.




but the stock camaro is not a true performance car by any stretch of the imagination... it is just a good looking RWD platform that can easily accept mods to make it a good performer.

if you think a stock 3rdgen is a performance car, then you dont know true performance..
if you are thinking of replying with something about modding it, then why not mod for the cupholder too.

theres not really anywhere to put them that i like, but the usual solutions are:

aftermarket fold out ones mounted to console/dash/door
clip on window ones
4thgen console swap (one in center, 1 on passenger front, 2 in rear)

thirdgenresource and hawks (i think) sell the cupholders that mount to the lower front portion of the door. I think some of the firebirds came with them from the factory.

Hey Mr Dude, the only thing i have on that list is a CD player. LOL. anyways. I've been thinking about taking out the clock in my console on my 82 z and putting one there, the only problem i could see would be the drink getting in the way of the shifter

ive seen that mod done.

if you are getting a super slurpee big gulp and you have a manual, its not even worth putting in..

with a auto its fine though.. just dont expect to be pulling into 1 and manually shifting.

I used a 2½" speaker port (would have used a larger one but, none were available when I got the idea). Works good enough for now....

well firebirds had them on the door but you had to have power windows. people have put them infront of the raido. if you dont have the power opitions they also put them infront of the arm rest on the console. i use my arm rest in the door i squeeze the bottom of the cup and push it between the door and the inside of the arm rest. it only works with the medium size fast food paper drink cup.

i have them on the door of my 91 formula, and as much as i like cup holders i hate these, they are a odd shape and do not fit any cups goodat all. They arnt very sturdy either, the drivers one broke so i had to fiberglass it bag together. but i dont have drinks in my car usually so it doesnt matter much. they are basically on there to cover up the holes they would have left in the door panel.

My shifter plate was made of t-6 aluminum, and has cupholders out of acrylic with chevy logo's in the bottom... they work great for cans and smaller cups, but not any thirst buster type things.
I would take pics but my transfer cable broke, cant get them on the computer. I have some computer generated photos from the design phase, and some from construction.

here is one from construction (shifter guide was changed to design pic, the gear pattern was messed up in the etching laser)... it looks really cool at night ( i wish i had pics). The shifter guide is backlit with blue LED's and the cupholders/ chevy logo (on top of shifter guide) are backlit with Red LED's.

Ditto with between the legs!!

Worked great until I dropped the 44oz from Taco Bell and it fell forward under my brake pedal with the top still on.

So.....I reach for it without applying my brakes (as to not "pop" the top off of it and spill the drink) and as I do this, I can't help but to press the gas pedal and grope for the drink with my left hand, while driving with my right.

I pass the Virgina State Police on his left and by the time I popped back up, he was behind me and lit up like a christmas tree.

$150 bucks.

u guys kick ***, i think i'm gonna go with the good ole clock delete made with all billet aluminum. I will be sure to get picks up when its all done with the matching billet radio and shifter plates.

This is how I did it on the camaro the 2nd time around. First time I used the tutorial on the site but it breaks to easy. This time I used cupholders from a saturn. I am still not happy with the results though. I think metal is the way to go for this. I might have a friend cut me a plate for it and then weld some tubing in.

I haven't had any pop spill on my CD player. Of course I don't ever drink cans. My pop always has a lid or cap on it.

I wonder if you could put one in the storage space in the center console. Have the depression for the cup inside the space, then have a piece of squishy foam attached to the lid that when shut puts force on the cup keeping it from falling over. This way you can drive like an *** without spilling your drink.

The only problem is how sanitary it is. I suppose you could put a piece of flexable plastic over the foam. I'm going to stick with between the legs though. Or the here, hold this to the passanger.

Aluminum sounds cool, but I don't think it would look good unless you made other things from aluminum to match.

yeah i had those on my 90 too, i was always hitting it with my foot getting in or out of the car. so when i redid my door panels i just left em off. i have a 96 T/A console but the only thing i use the cup holder for is putting my cell phone in.

I'd so love to have cup holders. I NEED cupholders! I can't be in my car without a Pepsi, lol! But I'm not cutting-up my interior to have them. And the ones for the doors won't work on the molded door panels, which I have.

So... it looks like I'll just continue to keep "things" cool down there.

I had cupholders in the door when I bought the car. They're really cheap and flimsy though, I wouldn't recommend buying them. There's really no support for a cup at all.

Now i just open my console lid and stick a drink in there. I have enough junk in the console that it holds it in place, unless I'm making a super sharp turn. Makes it hard to shift though if it's like a mcdonalds cup that has a straw. :/

For those who wanted to know... My shift guide goes P-R-N-4-3-2-1, and was fixed shortly after the pic was taken. (the pic was of the first shift indicator... it was screwed up, typo in the entry on the etching laser). It is backlit with blue LED's that light the entire shiift indicator, and red on everything else. The cup holders are VERY deep (go almost to floor), so spilling on the radio doesnt happen. Both cupholders, shift indicator, and chevy insigny above the shifter are out of acrylic, and the main plate is all constructed of t-6 aluminum.

XSVortex, have you seen the Sony plasma TVs with the power indicator light etched in glass? It's totally clear, but that etched bump lights up when you turn on the TV. I believe it's lit by aiming an LED sideways through the glass and it reflects off of the etching. You could do something like that on your indicator, and even have changing colors showing what gear you're in. Would look hot!

well i got a pretty good idea that i am going with soon as i get hte time....

I have already build an Amp rack that goes where my rear seats were.....and it comes pretty close to the console....wha ti have been using as a drink holder recently is one of those drink holder things from walmart that you slide inbetween teh seat and the console so im jsut gonna mount that on my amp rack and then build it into the rack....being that the rack is sealed i dont see where spillage would pose a problem with it and what not...so i think that is what i am going ot go wiht....

i made the ones on the tutorial but i had 3 problems, 1st off 2 cups won't fit in the opening without hitting the shifter, second the measurments that were given were wayy the hell off, and lastly i had a hell of a time drilling holes in the plexiglass i broke about 3 of them bofore one actually turned out right, the truck bedliner that he recommented works good but needed a gloss black spray over top to match the rest of the console, i'll take pics when i can

I have a guy that lent me the firebird Plate so I can Use it to make Him One. I will also be able to do custom Work Like CupHolders, Switches, Guages, Flush Mount XM Radio Controllers, Ect. I am Going to do a write up on how I am doing it with progress and Pics, also I might consider doing a few for some people if there is enough Demand.

my stock cupholders... I love these things, they don't look stupid, they're not on the dash, they're not in the way and they can hold the biggest big gulp cup you can buy

The only thing is they're way too forward to really do any good. Putting a can in them, you have to reach for it. Not to fun to do when driving. I use mine as a trash bin.

The LED's are aimed sideways... it looks really awsome. The shifter guide lights up blue entirely and the etching gives a nice effect off the numbering. The cupholders light up red... looks really cool at night, but i might take some 400 grit sandpaper to the acrylic to get a more even lighting on it. The colors and shifter plate match my head unit nicely, as soon as I get a camera cord that works (or a better camera) i'll take some night shots. Thanx for the comments.

If u have a Camaro for a daily driver, id says its cool with a cupholder. But if you dont drive it often and only at special ocassions, i realy dont like it that..... IMO , there just soo sedan or SUV I dont even think fathers 86 VETTE has a cupholder
