Spidering and cracks - repairable?

Found the answer on a different forum. Thank you.

Images are of my 1989. Can these be rapiers, or do I need to buy new? Paint is required either way, of course.

Re: Spidering and cracks - repairable?

Hope you found the answer in the other forum...

Once this happens it’s usually the urethane underneath thats cracked. Some of these bumpers will crack even if they haven’t been hit from age, highway driving, flex, etc. If you strip the paint you can see light through the cracks in the actual urethane so you have to repair and sand the urethane before repainting...

Just repainting sometimes works with good prep, but some cracks may come back over time. It’s more noticeable on neglected paint though because dirt will work into the cracks...

The noses on these cars always had issues...

I’ve seen the cracks come back even with high end paint jobs... You have to repair the urethane bumper or it will crack the new paint again... You can’t just put new paint on top of cracks no matter how good the prep

It’s super annoying and they can crack just from age, vibration, temperature... They don’t always have to get hit to crack...

There is prep/repair..and then there is replacement parts..that might not take so much prep..and be less of a cost.. but if your part can not be found as a new replacement part (not used) well its time to spend even more money.. or Vinyl wrap.. they can do alot of stuff in a gloss wrap now..
