Iroc door decals or no decals?

The car is back from the paint shop. It's an Iroc and I've debated on keeping the car the way the shop finished it... no door decals.

What's everyone's opinion? Seems like the non third gen crowd says, no decals, but the third gen'ers say, put them back on

Re: Iroc door decals or no decals?

Well....I say put them on. I have a DX3 stripe delete car and I've been tempted to install a stripe kit and door decals. The only reason why I haven't is because I am a purist and havent talked myself into it yet because my car technically isnt supposed to have them. If my car didnt have the DX3 on the SPID, it would have the decals on it for sure.

The solid color is growing on me, though.....I may end up at least putting the IROC-Z on the doors, even without the stripes.....but who knows lol

Re: Iroc door decals or no decals?

the closer to stock it is, I'd say put them on, they look good, but a lowered black iroc with no decals #1, IMO...

It's been modified. The car came with gold emblems and I've switched to silver/black

Re: Iroc door decals or no decals?

I'm gonna vote for door decals.

It looks super clean with no side moldings, and painted door handles and locks, but I think the IROC-Z on the doors will be the little bit that sets it off. Just my opinion

My car is all white too, but has side moldings, and the factory black door handles and locks so there is a little more to break up the side of the car with no decals.

Re: Iroc door decals or no decals?

Here you go guys. Dagwood I like just the black IROC with no stripes and the "lined" logo. I think you could go to a local graphics shop and have them cut a couple black vinyls. It should be cheaper than that Pheniox set and since your car has the stripe delete anyway this should be affordable and easily removable

Blackgloves, I would put the irocz in the door handle and call it a day. I did a layout with the solid logo so you could see what it looks like. I like the solid one on your car better if you chose that route.

I think it will look great either way after seeing your photo Vinny. I'll add it back on and can always remove it if I want. Thanks for posting that

Re: Iroc door decals or no decals?

The photo Vinny posted looks like aftermarket all black decals? Or am I wrong. I thought the door decals had some kind of 2 tone black/grey.

Definitely voting for decals, but my opinion would be for the black and grey ones over solid black.

Re: Iroc door decals or no decals?

Your cars looks just great.

I could go either way on the decals. The photoshop above doesn't look like 100% accurate decals. If you can't get one that are exactly like the originals, I'd probably go with them. Otherwise, no. I think decals that don't look 100% original just kind of yell "fake IROC-Z," which you don't want considering you have the real thing.

Nice car! Quick question does that side molding come off for paint or sand around it and paint over. Ask cause mine has the black molding. Sorry for the hijack post. Btw put on the door decals! Let everyone know what you got! Lots of folks have no idea about these cars and what makes the different.

That's the stickers that I'd want. I don't know if they're original, but they look right to me. The solid ones on the photoshop above just don't look quite right to me.

Your gray and yellow striping is a really nice accent.

The one I used on Dagwood's car is this exact decal. You just can't see the lines in the photoshop file I saved. It was more just to get the look so he could see what it looks like without stripes.and just the logo. BTW your DX3 is a "Stripe Delete". not a "Decal Delete" so technically if you add the logo you are now SPID correct!

I purposely used the solid on Black Gloves car as is is not original anyway so I thought the solid fit the more modern look of his car.

Re: Iroc door decals or no decals?

I think the car looks good without them and I’m usually very “pro” decals.

The painted handles and locks, no door moldings and the Vette wheels give it a modern look. I think the more modern IROCs look good without the decals..

Conversely sometimes if you lower the car, put big standout wheels on along with other exterior mods sometimes the 80s decals and stripes look out of place..

dagwood, I’d be very tempted to add the stripes and decals to yours because it’s so nice and stock looking.. I’d also be torn because of the originality... I was torn about repainting my Vert too because it was in really good shape but I knew I’d enjoy new paint more than originality.. I knew I could restore the exterior to spec and be super psyched about it every time I see it.. That option won out for me..

Since the car is no longer factory-original, do whatever you like.

If you're looking for opinions though, mine is to leave the decals off the car; it looks very good as-is, as shown in the pic in post #7.

Thank you!
The factory side moldings are held on with a 2 sided foam tape and can be removed for paint and reinstalled with new tape

These things can be difficult to remove bc they are old and so is the adhesive, but old OR new, waxed dental floss behind one corner, then "floss" em off...

In vote for the decals, I had them reapplied after my car was repainted. IMHO they are a part of what an IROC is.

The guys I worked for and the guy that painted my IROC used to say you can’t save the factory moldings.. if the metal gets bent at all they won’t look right when you try to put them back on..

Dental floss doesn’t sound like a bad idea, but definitely warm up the adhesive with a hair dryer and go slow to remove..

The hawks reproduction paintable moldings are great.. The guy that painted my car was going to get some NOS moldings in whatever color and paint them, but he actually said the Hawks repros are better than the originals and very easy to work with.. The new reproductions are pre cut as well.. They only have the 88-92 style though.. You’d never notice the difference unless you open the door and look for the metal strip.. 85-87 you’re out of luck.. no reproduction for those..

I decided to get them back on. I spoke to a guy at the local car hangout tonight that will meet me friday at a place that makes decals. I will have them made in black instead of silver. The original color was gold
