I didn't choose a 3rd Gen....I think a certain 3rd Gen chose me.

In 1985, I picked a black & silver Dodge Shelby Charger w/5 speed & 2.2 liter Turbo over 3rd Gen Camaro. My father purchased the car, outright.

Zero 1985 L69 Z28 5 speeds were available, despite visiting over a dozen dealers. Previously, I'd drove a few L69's but they'd all sold. That was the car I lusted after.

The Shelby in less than 24 hours proved a stereotype of an 80's American car. A collection of low quality unreliable junk. The ignition system failed less in less five minutes about three miles from the dealership. The electronics from another Shelby was swapped in. Later it rained. The next morning the Shelby had about an inch of water in the floor board. On way back to dealership, the transmission started clunking non stop or maybe it was a rod, I never knew the outcome. Not exactly sure what occurred between my father and the owner of the dealership's son but the dealership refunded the payment. While the Shelby was a horrible experience, the integrity of that specific Dodge Chrysler dealership was well known in the community. Many years later the same dealership fixed quite a few Caravan transmissions that failed just out of warranty - at the dealerships expense. Outstanding dealer.

what kind of sacrifices did u make to get it how hard did u work for it?
Suffering owning through owning a Dodge for ~20 hours .

My parents paid for my Camaro, so my mother absolutely vetoed an yellow 86 IROC Z28 because the center tail light made it look like a lemon on four wheels.

Finding an L69 was again impossible. I disliked the 305 TPI compared to the L69. My Camaro SC looked very similar to this car.

I loved the car especially the brakes and handling. However, love quickly faded, cooling leaks, door pulls falling off, bad relays, GM dealers lying about part available to fix warranty issues and the clear coat turned chalk white at 14 months just out of warranty. GM was like we don't care that's your problem. Don't like it, then pay to have it repainted. (Later a class action lawsuit made it GM's problem again. )People usually hate GM for logical reasons.

Four years and 84,000 miles, the POS build quality showed. My little v6 Camaro was falling apart ready for the Cement Blocks in someone's front yard. Bad MAF, defective fuel injectors, slipping transmission, worn out shocks & struts, over heating, and a very badly frosted white clear coat on all top surfaces exposed to the sun 🌞 ☀️ 🌤

what made you love Camaro’s how sentimentality attached are you to your car
Honestly, nothing cause my first 3rd Gen was low quality GM junk.

But in late 1989, I took a BLACK 1990 IROC L98 for a test drive. It was instant ❤ love ❤ even more than the 85 L69. I also seem to recall something like one of the auto rags actually said something nice about the 1990's Camaro refresh $20,000 looks for $15,000

My parents were 100% against another Camaro as it was time to grow up. I'd graduated college and had been working and saving for over two years. I could and would pay cash with money I earned for the new car. It hurt seeing savings slashed 85% to buy a car. I had zero expectations a new Camaro would be good car, I didn't care it was pretty I expected 3.5 years of use before it too started falling apart.

In short, I fell in love with the look of the 1990 IROC but the short production run pushed me into the early release 1991 model. Despite my best effort I couldn't swing a L98 B4C

I didn't like the F40 wing of the Z28 and settled on a forlorn 1991 Arctic White RS that had sat on the dealer lot since Feb of 1990.

The car had better paint than the other Camaro’s I'd seen - no orange peel! Somehow the RS just looked better. The window sticker was missing but it was a new car never titled. I spotted a missing ashtray and a screw falling out of the dash, the center console was slightly crooked.. This was a massive red flag but I missed at the time as I haggle a good deal Week later I discovered the transmission dipstick was missing 25 years later I discovered the reason the RS vibrated over 85 mpg - tail shaft yoke was cracked, probably from the wreck when new.

The RS of course had been hit and wrecked before it was sold as a new car! I'd learn this many years later when the extensive damage was found and pointed out by a body shop.

Of course, none of that would matter as my Arctic White 91 RS would prove the best most reliable car I've owned. I've owned two Toyota's and a Honda and all three had more issues The RS has had a very hard life, a history of misadventures

389,500 miles, 25 years as the Daily Driver, then Restoration & LS swap. 401,500 miles and counting

The white RS also inspired buying Black Echo a 91 RS Convertible. Also a 91 Z28 for my stepson later on.

Arctic White's reliability would result in me buying several other new GM cars and several used GM cars over the years...including a used 238,000 mile 4th Gen version of the RS an 02 Z28 w/tops & 2.73 gears

Most friends laugh at me for spending more than what a new 2016 Grand Sport cost on my 91 RS resto-mod .

I really don't care what others think as I'd do it again without hesitation.

BINGO! Great story. Those 80s Shelbys are rarer than almost anything. But yeah, "Chrysler" and "quality" have never gone together. Ever.

Re: What made you buy your 3rd gen?

Although I'm the right age, I didn't have one when I was young, we were mostly poor to not-quite-middle-class - we did repairs all week hoping our 1st and 2nd gen cars would make it through the Saturday night cruise! Instead I have my brother to blame - in 2004 he knew a guy that only wanted $500 for a running 1990 RS L03. I was age 40 and said "sure, $500 for a running V8 - never hurts to have an extra set of wheels around." Car was blue hardtop with wide white hood/trunk stripes and a super crushed driver door. Then, since I generally fix my own junk, I found this site. As the weeks passed and I drove the car and did little things here and there, I got the bug - REALLY BAD! I read a ton of info and asked a ton of questions here (forum name then was Camaronewbie). I started doing things I never imagined I'd attempt (like porting 416 heads) simply because I had nothing to lose and fun knowledge to gain. I had no shop or garage, just me, a concrete driveway, jack & stands, a tarp, and an ever growing box of Harbor Freight tools. After a couple years I had pretty much molested that poor 305 to it's limit. And decided that if I was going to spend real money/time on pretty (bodywork, paint, clean interior) and 'go fast' that I was going to have T-tops.

Shortly afterwards I found a 17 year old with a teal 1992 RS T-top for $900 that "wasn't running." I was told dead battery, bad fuel pump, no oil pressure when it did crank, and a laundry list of other issues. I snagged a buddies F250, hooked up a Uhaul full size car trailer, and took a 5 hour drive north to dig this girl out of the snow onto the trailer with a come-along. 5 hours back home, returned trailer, and caught a couple hours of sleep only to find that car easily started with the battery charged, fuel pump relay was burnt up, and oil pressure sender wouldn't send signal to gauge and would cut off fuel pump after few minutes. 3 hours on charger and $25 in parts and I was cruisin'! T-tops, good interior (except dash pad and driver seat), electric windows, rear defrost, power hatch, 16" wheels and very little rust. Sold 'ole Blue for $1000 to a teenager that wrapped it around a tree 5 weeks later. I actually drove the car that summer (2006 or 2007?) to Carlisle, Pa. for the Chevrolet car and American Camaro Association show. I actually entered as a judged car because then I could drive into the fairgrounds and park for $25 instead of walking in from a parking lot a mile away. She had scratched oxidized paint, bad weather stripping, rear quarter panel dent, cratered dash pad, cracked nose cone, oil leaks, bald tires and all! But it was washed, vacuumed, and the green glowing tire cleaner at the local car wash made the engine bay sparkle (OK, maybe not "sparkle", but semi-clean). Awesome weekend - saw beautiful cars, got tons of ideas and info, bought more stuff from the 'yard sellers' than those poor 15 year old shocks could carry. And I was at least 5th in the top 10 proudest Camaro owners there! Some poor guy made the mistake of being within my hearing range, and commented to his buddy "What a piece of junk this is! Why is this even here?" I immediately stood tall and shouted "OK Mr. Hot ****, where the Fudge is YOUR Camaro?" I had a 50/50 shot and I got lucky - he was merely a spectator!

Then the fun started with a box of chinese wrenches and "lefty loosie". On the concrete drive but now under a $98 10x20ft Harbor Freight "carport", I lovingly started taking off the bad and replacing with good as I could locate and afford. There were many nights that wife & kids had to eat elsewhere because I had dining table covered in parts. My browser history had 3 listings, Ebay, Craigslist and Thirdgen.org! Being older, I had patience, but not a fat wallet - most of my hard-earned went into suspension, body, and interior. I did everything myself - labor is expensive and reading is free! What seemed like my most extravagant item was a mint dash pad that cost me $300! I swapped the 305 for a 350 with a small cam I scavenged for $650 carb to oil pan. Everyday turned into a "While I'm at this point it's easier to do ... now" - which pushed my patience because that meant more time saving instead of finishing. When I finally got the 350 in (with the headers that cost almost as much as entire engine) and running, I shot out the driveway with the biggest grin! A mile down the road I found that the 700R4 that previously shifted behind the 305, slipped (and bad) behind the 350. Arrrgggghhhh! A definite Charley Brown moment! But I got lucky and found a tranny shop guy that did quality rebuilds at home on the weekends cheap. "While I'm at this point" kicked in again for a stall converter and shift kit - it's a vicious cycle! She never ran great (what ya want from a $650 motor tuned by an idiot with a $1 screwdriver), but was tons more fun than the 305! I scored a 4th gen rear end with 3.42 posi and disc brakes, lowered 1in on Eibach springs, saved up for Bilsteins all around. Adjustable panhard bar, the 'wonder' bar, poly everything bushings, wheel bearings, steering components. Yard sale sub/amp, almost mint 4th gen seats, overhead console (I know, but it's what I wanted), even custom built dash box to hold an original Camaro clock. Every nickel scavenged from every source to fuel the obsession! Several eternities (months) later UPS delivered a (much smaller than anticipated for $1100) box of House of Kolor Kandy Teal paint. My brother and I traded a lot of cash and some engine rebuilding labor for the services of a friend that owns a body shop. We stripped the car of everything I did not want green ourselves, and we spent many many hours sanding by hand. Being factory teal saved me a lot since door jambs and such didn't really have to be done, but the plastic nose crack wasn't as repairable as hoped - Hawks had one last GM factory nose left at the time, and for a painful $400 it was at the paint shop next day! The friend did a righteous job for what little he actually got - hooked me up with (barely enough) metallic silver from a prior Mercedes repair, painted my light buckets black, and at last minute allowed me to swap in a louver hood. I proceeded to put her back together, and (although not fast, maybe 225hp) finally I had a truly worthy piece to display that I also had a ball driving! And although it seemed like a lot then (and even still now), every penny of it produced a joy only overshadowed by the birth of my son! Although not a "classic" yet her and I joined local classic Chevy car club, went to many many local shows and cruise-ins. We went back to Carlisle in 2009, and attended F-body Gathering in Atlanta in 2010.

The real world reared it's ugly head in 2011 - fired from a seemingly secure job, unexpected separation (and subsequent divorce), was forced to move away from the car clubs and expense of city life, and my brother moved to Maine in pursuit of his dreams. Unemployed and depressed, I almost sold my baby - but I knew I'd never get back out what I had put in. Paved streets and concrete driveway turned to dirt roads and stone/grass driveway, best protection I could afford was $50 car cover, and I drove her very little. I changed parking footprint every month, and filled her interior with dryer sheets and engine bay with mothballs to keep out the critters. Got work again and worked my tail off taking every minute I could get, which meant no time for much fun. Was difficult - on one hand I still had my baby and we were at least OK, on the other hand I felt like she was withering away because the worst thing for a car is to not drive it. Over the years I found more time (and $) here and there - I had her professionally detailed yearly, kept decent covers on her, kept the mice and bugs at bay, and drove her more.

Been at a good job now for several years, drive her to work at least once a week. I finally paid off my mom's house for her, took care of some personal issues, and managed to save a special stash for my girl! My brother moved back locally to a house with a basement garage. Through the years I had managed to keep a 350 short block I had gotten free - dropped it off at machine shop and it passed inspection, just needed a little honing and cleaning. Read some older build articles and found one affordable (to me) that made 400hp at crank with stock bottom end - so grabbed Paypal card and followed this 'recipe' as closely as possible. Packages started coming, and I drove her to brother's basement last week. I had shop reassemble bottom end and install new cam, lifters, pushrods, roller rockers, and Edelbrock aluminum heads. I know everyone's swapping new tech programmable fuel injection make adjustments with your "smart" phone LSx motors, and this is old school flat tappet relic - but I am a 56 year old flat tappet relic myself! And MY girl understands that I'm not rich, that I do what I can when I can for her, that she is loved as much or more than anyone's ride, and although jobs and wives and everything else may come and go, me and her will have fun together until eternity takes us both!

Sorry my story's a little long in the tooth, but it's hard to summarize (and convey the feelings) of a 17 year affair.

Re: What made you buy your 3rd gen?

I had an older cousin and older godbrother that both drove foxbody mustangs. One drag raced his, the other kept his stock. Got me into them. When I turned 17, started looking for one as well. Went to a used car lot to look at one, and saw an IROC beside it. Fell in love instantly.
That's what got me started on my new quest to buy a Camaro instead.
It helped that I had another cousin that had an 85 Camaro that he drag raced. So I still had some inspiration that way.

The one cousin with a Foxbody worked for GM, so I had access to decent pricing from GMPP. Helped me buy the dual snorkel air cleaner way back in the late 90s.

Fabulous story and I enjoyed every word.

That's priceless $500 for the first Camaro and you had the car running again in practically no time A++

Re: What made you buy your 3rd gen?

This test in 1988 made me do it..... almost 35 years later!

Look at those two cars, one is sharp, sleek and agressive the other is, well, not. Looks more lika a european Ford of the 80's.

Always been a Camaro guy and it was the early 2nd gen, 70 - 73, that was my first "love" but when I saw the IROC-Z that was it.

Re: What made you buy your 3rd gen?

What made me buy my 91 third gen? The story is really quite short and simple. I'm an "old gearhead" from the 70s. (I'm 68 years old.) I owned a brand new 1976 TA that I paid $6600 cash for back in 76. I really wanted a 1st gen, but the ones that didn't need any work were too much money, and the ones that needed work were too much money. More than I was willing to spend, anyway. At my age, I still have way too many projects, and I also wanted a "Vert," or Ragtop, which is my preferred terminology. I was looking at lots of different classics, ranging from a 66 Toronado to a 71 Buick Electra Convertible when this came along, just 200 miles away, priced right.
I've only had it since December, and more or less have just finished taking care of the little things that bothered me, mostly interior cosmetic in nature....... But I have definitely caught the "bug" as I'm looking at a red 92 convertible to add to the stable right now. My bride of 34 years isn't happy.

And BTW....as a side note, I need a L/H air dam/valance, P/N 10018555, if anybody has one.

Re: What made you buy your 3rd gen?

I had 3 Firebird 2.8L and now a Trans AM in my life
Last picture on bottom is 1986 Trans Am 5.0L carb I'm Still working on Right Now which i bought 3 years ago all the other one are long gone

.

It all started
all the way back in 1982 when I was still in High School and saw the first 1982 Pontiac Firebird TV Commercial for the first time
I was convince in was The most advance us car design ever made, I love it,it was love at first sight.
The only car I loved more was the Pontiac Fiero and The 80's Countach with the cool Sony sound system and cel phone, wow.
I use to go to the dealer by bicycle to get the new brochure at the GM PONTIAC Dealer (not the Ford garbage car dealer)
I felt in love with the third Gen,but couldn't afford one only until Many years later when I quite school and go my second job working at mc Donald where my beautiful manager Lucie had a Firebird park at work and boy,i was looking at her and her firebird like a Hawk, lol looking at it every day,I still remember it was the time we use to watch the space shuttle live on tv before the challenger disaster and Finaly i bought my own years later used, then i bought another one and another one. Now being 55 years old the reason I bought another one again, since my last Firebird was in 2000 was, the thought that one day I should buy the car of my dream again before I get too old,to enjoy it,so I did and now own a 1986 Trans AM
Loosing a old Mechanic at Work from a sudden heart attack also strengthen my idea or thought of, do it Now before its to late and enjoy life.
Dedicated to a friend and Chief mechanic in charge at Pilitak who pass away in 2021, RiP Andre, God Bless you, Cheers

Re: What made you buy your 3rd gen?

I guess ill share my story, it was the summer going into 7th grade, my family being mainly composed of mechanics I decided it was about time I got into cars, a fluke google search of "cheap muscle cars" presented me with a google image of a silver 1984 Z28, I was awestruck, it was perfect and exactly what I was looking for, at that moment I was head over heels in love with third gens. From that day on I began saving every dime I got ( quite literally). I started doing odd jobs, racking leaves, snow etc pretty much anything I could do to get money. I was dead set on getting a Z then on the first day of 8th grade the new bus route included a stop in front of a house with a Bright Blue 1987 iroc z, to say I was in love was a understatement, my whole day was looking forward to seeing that car in the morning and afternoon on the bus ride, after many failed attempts at trying to buy the car I gave up, the owners refused to sell it. Fast forward about a year towards the end of 9th grade and my addiction was in full swing, everything and anything I thought about was getting a third gen, well as my 15th birthday came the only thing I asked for was permission to keep a car in the driveway, reluctantly my parents agreed and the hunt was on, all day and all night I spent looking for the perfect iroc, I looked at two irocs, a Blue 1986 Iroc that was beat to hell and had mismatched Iroc rims and a Black ttop 350 87 Iroc that was fully loaded but also a piece of ****. About two days after looking at the Black iroc my dad sent me a picture of a Black 88 vert iroc for sale in Maryland, really mint car for the price but sadly sold right as we called the guy about it, well after talking to the guy we come to find out he actually collects irocs and has a few others for sale those being a 1991 RS vert that was way out of my price range and a Bright Yellow 86 iroc that was fully loaded that was my exact budget, so we agreed to come look at the Yellow iroc that Saturday, to say I was excited was a understatement, that car ride was the longest 5 hours of my life, when we got there and the garage door was opened to the building I was in awe and sitting in the back corner of the building was a Bright Blue 87 iroc that the guy would not sell!. Anyway I ended up buying the Yellow iroc and the rest is history, well after buying my Yellow iroc I got the Firebird itch and decided I needed a Firebird, after learning my Dad and Grandfather bought a 85 Trans am brand new that was a fully loaded dealer promo car I decided I needed to get my Dad back in a trans am, almost two years after buying my Iroc I finally bought a Trans am to give to my dad, for $3000 I got a Dark Sapphire Metallic 86 Trans am fully loaded one owner car with 150k miles, the car was very much a project and my dad didnt really like the car so that following summer I was able to find him a trans am exactly like his old one, it was a mint 86 White T/A with 106k miles and it was still owned by the original owner, after he bought it I ended up taking owner ship of the Dark Sapphire car and started daily driving it until a elderly lady blew a red light and took the front end out, with the insurance money from the car I was able to pick up a practically brand new Bright Red 86 Iroc with only 37k miles on it, it required driving to almost Canada but it was well worth it. its a really long story and sorry about grammar and all but thats pretty much my story up until now. Im proud to say though that I was able to buy these Irocs by myself, hope my story helps inspire other younger third gen lovers to prove that anything is possible, although shitty things happen everything always works out in the end for better or worse keep your head up and keep on keepin on!

Re: What made you buy your 3rd gen?

I owned a 1972 Buick GS (350) #s matching for 21 years & we restored it over that time to near show condition & it win . many trophies. After having to pull the engine last summer to rebuild the heads & doing refinishing/detailing under the hood, I decided it was time time to let someone else enjoy this car.
What I wanted in my next car was a car that I could enjoy, be proud of & enjoy - not a show/trophy car.
I purchase my 1984 Trans AM, sight unseen, a few days after selling the Buick. It had 21000 actual miles, paint like new, interior like new, no body rust. However, under the hood was a mess. I took 3 weeks starting April 11 for 3 solid weeks to refurb under the hood & it looks great. Yes I had to purchase hoses, water pump, a lot of rattle can paint, coolant, etc. A wash & wax today. The car look

s great!

Re: What made you buy your 3rd gen?

During later years of high school and early years of college (mid-1990s), seven friends all had 3rd generation Camaros, with various years and engines. One had the Iron Duke 4-banger, a couple had the 2.8 V-6, and the other four had the 5.0 L V-8. They were the "Camaro Club". I had wanted a 3rd Generation Camaro, but I wanted one in great condition, and I never had enough money saved to get one. Fast forward to age 43, and I found this one-owner 1989 RS in awesome condition and low miles (15,000). It wasn't the dream 5.7 L 350 IROC-Z I had wanted, but it's got the 5.0 L V-8 and I am glad I found it. Now that I finally have a Camaro, the friends' cars are all in junkyards. I will keep looking for the dream IROC-Z...

Cool story. Good luck in your continued search. I just a saw a young kid, probably 19 or 20, driving a late 80's blue IROC down my street. They have a distinct look to them even today.

Re: What made you buy your 3rd gen?

Why did I buy a 3rd gen? I graduated high school in 1988 and I always remember a kid a year older that bought a brand new GTA. I then bought an '86 Z28 with 305TPI then later an '88 IROC-Z. Fast forward 34 years and I got the itch to get either a IROC-Z or a GTA predominantly to drive in the Hot Rod Power Tour. Needless to say most of them have been rode hard. but it didn't take long to find one that was not a basket case. I was amazed at how pictures lie and some folks just don't see the same things I do (mint does not equal nice). I had one guy say a '91 GTA had won trophies at car shows only to drive 2 hours and find a car that needed almost everything. lol

Anyway after a search I found this '88 GTA and its far from perfect but good enough for a driver.

Re: What made you buy your 3rd gen?

What made me buy my black 1987 5.7L Trans Am GTA with digital displays? The reasons are simple:

1. It's a stunningly good looking car that holds up very well, even by modern standards

2. The digital instrument clusters are some of the most visually appealing of any car of its era.

3. Stoplight to stoplight, the L98 is a great performer. it's very reliable and it gets great gas mileage.

4. Mine has C&C T tops which I think are better than factory.

5. The driving dynamics are excellent, even by modern standards.

6. Handling is excellent. It takes the corners with very little body roll.

7. It's supremely fun to drive and it gets a ton of looks.

8. Did I mention how cool the digital instrument cluster is, especially at night?

9. As a classic car, it's currently a great value. It get a ton of car for the money, especially when compared to 1st and 2nd gens.

10. Did I mention that L98 off the line?

:-)

I was 22 and a co workers husband had a stunningly beautiful black on black 92 firebird formula. I knew I had to have one took me about 6 months to find THEE one, a 1991 formula with a 5 spd, and have had it ever since.
