Clay bars, you won't believe this....

I wouldn't myself if I hadn't blundered into it. I had some scratches on my windshield (brand new, really peed me off) I had no expectations of this doing anything for them, so there are no before and after pics. It looked like a grinding disc had slid across the glass and left scratches I could definitely feel with a fingernail. I tried a razor on them thinking it may be some type of contamination. DEFINITELY scratches. My heart sank. I was just claying the glass to remove a haze from overspray from being in a body shop for a year. Windshield came out sparkly clean. I go back the next day to look at this horridly disappointing thing that had happened to my new glass..... I couldn't find them. I think to myself, no f-n way. It had to be something just stuck to the glass that I mistook for a scratch. So I found another small scratch in the glass, marked it with a marker from the inside so there was no doubt where it was and went to work with the bar again for a few minutes. No doubt this time, it polished the scratch out. This made no sense to me, but I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, so I didn't question how or why it worked. I did a google search on it and there are no other instances I could find. These were not heavy scratches, fine, but definitely visible and could catch a fingernail on them. I am certain there will be the typical replies of "pics or it didn't happen". Just passing on my experience here and hoping it may help others out.

Well that is just 10 kinds of crazy, I need to try that!! So did it come out perfect or did it haze? I'm kind of worried that my results would be dreadful!!

I'll have to try this on my back hatch. What specific brand of clay did you use?

No haze of any kind. I had seen vids of people cleaning glass with this method, so it's a pretty common use for them. There were deeper parts of the scratches that left a small pit, but I think with a little more effort they may come out. I have French doors that my shepherd has scratched up pawing against that will really put this to the test. When we get some better weather I will try it out.

I used Mothers kit with the California gold detailing solution, about $22. Two bars, the detail solution and a detailing cloth.

Re: Clay bars, you won't believe this....

I've just tried this on some tempered glass with less promising results. Possibly raw glass is softer. Maybe the scratches were too deep. I was able to remove a scuff from it though. They make different grades of clay, aggressive, medium, fine and such. So apparently it has some abrasive qualities. This is something I will be experimenting with as it is kind of exciting. (how boring is my life?)
