Paint Dilemma

So I have paint code WA-L8774.. The car is a 1991 Camaro Z28. The current color has faded a lot so it's probably a bit darker than original.. I'm having everything painted except the engine compartment so I'm not sure I can deviate from the color.. Does this color tend to refract a pink'ish hue? I have noticed quite a few pictures of what I believe to be this exact color and I'm freaking out that it does produce the pink'ish hue.. The worst part is, I bought the car for my wife and she hates pink with a passion.. the rims are almost straight up pink (first thing she noticed) from so much wear which makes me think the rest of the car could produce this effect (even after painted).. Is any of this accurate and what are my options? I'm starting to obsess over this! Please help.. what are my options, ideas etc...?

Re: Paint Dilemma

This color does start to look pink once it fades but I can assure that if you repaint it it will look like this

not my car by the way...

Re: Paint Dilemma

The color itself doesnt have a pink-ish hue, the red has just faded over 22 years. It seems quite common for the red wheels to fade to pink. I've seen wheels more faded than yours...ones that actually were straight up pink.

Looks like the clearcoat is shot from the second pic, behind the t-tops. I think you're finding a lot of pictures of other 22 year old red camaro with similar paint problems. From the factory the red is just that...red. The paint wasnt designed to give off a pink-ish hue. Just keep up on the car when you get it painted, and you should be fine, it wont fade to pink like the wheels. The color is closer to your door jambs or under your hood, where the clear hasnt been so weathered.

Do you think I should remove the clear on the rims, clean them up and have them re-painted and cleared again? Agreed on using the same paint code as it will match better to the door jambs and under the hood. It is going to get the door jambs painted, but not under the hood.. that is a massive under taking... just want this car looking nice..

and to the other poster.. lol @ macco.. I'm using PPG with one of the best clearcoats you can get... maybe on a complete pile I would try macco.. on a Classic Camaro?? You crazy son??

Re: Paint Dilemma

Yeah, I'd do something about the pink wheels for sure. The faded red has got to go. ha The paint under your hood shouldn't be so faded it wont match, I wouldn't touch that unless doing a color change...obviously.

Re: Paint Dilemma

I was in a situation much like yours a few months ago and have the same paint code. Although I am not a big fan of red cars I decided to have it repainted the original color. Still not a big fan. Here are the results.

Re: Paint Dilemma

If you're doing a B/C with the best PPG has to offer and doing the proper prep. ($$$$) unless you’re doing a restoration the engine bay would be the last thing I would worry about. I would take my time and pick a red that you want. I did what you are planning to do and he sprayed the metal under the hood and what was around the outside of the bay.

In this photo you can see that the red around the bay and under the hood is darker than what is under the strut tower/casters and fire wall. I’m not doing a restoration so it does not bother me in the least.

Re: Paint Dilemma

In terms of fading, red fades the quickest of any color - sun bleaches out the red pigment the quickest and you get a pinkish color. Acura is notorious for red TSX's turning pink after 4 to 6 years in the sun.

Re: Paint Dilemma

Just another reason to go with a darker red and only use a high quality base and clear. I have used only synthetic wax that I believe is the way to go when you want a little extra protection. I do keep my car under a carport at home but its my DD and sees plenty of sun. This is after 6 years .
The front valance is the one I use because of the rubbing on the nose. Its not the one that was on there at paint time.

Re: Paint Dilemma

Ron and Nova, that is one hellava paint job!! I really like the red.. have a red vette also.. this one is my wifes car and she loves that bright red.. it's very eye catching that's for sure.. kinda like the cherries on top of a cop car.. that part, not so good.. hahhahaha I'm going to stop obsessing about it and enjoy the fact it will look a hundred times better than how it does now!! Thanks all!

Re: Paint Dilemma

Doggie thanks for the compliments your car looks pretty good in the pics mine was much more faded than yours prior to painting. I chose not to go the Maaco route with my car. Whether that was a good or bad thing remains to be seen. All I did was drop the car off, take pictures everyday hand over 5k and drive it home. They used Du Pont ppg base clear matched to the factory color as far as I know. Ron's car definitely provided me with some inspiration for getting this done. Here is a couple of updated, hopefully better, pics.
