There's a New Camaro In Town...
Hey TGO.
Those of you that are familiar with me may be wondering right now why I am creating this thread when I already have a build thread going on. Well, with the new paint and bodywork all finished up, I figured I would start this thread to celebrate the complete exterior custom restoration and familiarize everyone with my car since I will be attempting a run for car of the month around January or February once all the fine details have been finished (Still need to install, driver-side mirror and am going to sice the wheels up a bit with some black centercaps, black lugnuts and paint the inside of the triangle sections black).
To make a very long story short, I bought this car going on five years ago by scraping together what little savings I had made working a bum job at a pizza parlor. This was the first car I ever owned. Due to being a complete gumshoe to the gearhead scene at the time and alot of misfortune, the car was parked half the time I owned it and ultimately ended up breaking down and sitting for almost a year with the odds of ever being road/eye worthy again stacking up against her. I never lost hope though. And when the tables turned in 2011, I began what I had been dreaming of since the day I brought her home. One year and almost $15k later, here she is.
If you want an idea of just how much of a beginner I really was "Back then", check out the first thread I ever made here on TGO right after buying the car:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tech...r-got-few.html
If you want the full story on just how far I have come with this car, here is the link to my build thread:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/memb...story-his.html
I understand some of the things you guys see on this car are not factory correct. The tail-lights have been amber deleted, the end sections of the side moldings extend all the way to the fender flares instead of being stubbies and the headlight buckets were not painted the factory correct satin black. However, the whole point of everything I have done to this car was that I wanted a statement that best suited MY tastes. I am doing everything on this car for me and no one else. With that said being...
This was her one day one:
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...y/CIMG0734.jpg
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...y/IMG00001.jpg
Being the young fool that I was at the time, I ended up getting a little carried away on I-95 one morning headed to work when the unthinkable happened and I ended up with this:
Someone was looking out for the both of us that day. I plowed into a Silverado at nearly 70MPH during rush hour. The car was able to drive home and I walked away without so much as a scratch.
(This picture shows a full view of how she looked before entering the body shop. The front end was not looking good, and the paint was peeling and chipping everywhere down to the primer and on a few spots bare metal):
Now, after everything throughout 2011 and 2012 was said and done, after a full performance transmission rebuild, built rearend, suspension upgrades and some engine work, here is what I ended up with. These photos were taken right after I got her home from the bodyshop:
Here are some photos of the engine. The engine bay has since been coated in black bedliner, the hideous coolant overflow and washer fluid tanks have been discarded, I installed a set of aluminum underdrive pullies and a matching themed plenum distributor cover, but other than that all is the same:

And here is the best picture I have of her so far.
This is just after the first wax on the new paint using the turtlewax blackbox kit and installing the lowering kit. The driver side mirror is still missing in this photo (It was painted the wrong shade of black and needs to be re-sprayed):

Re: There's a New Camaro In Town...
And for those of you wondering what all has been done to this car in terms of mods, here is the maintenance text file I copied and pasted. Hope you are patient because it is fairly long. Pretty much the goal was to see how far I could take the stock components that the car from the factory with, obviously still being very streetable and DD worthy in the end. All I need to do now is build the new engine and a front end rebuild, restore the A/C plus a few other goodies on my list and I'm calling it a day.
For details on the very oddball motor I am plotting, go here:
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tech...named-lb4.html
I hope you guys have enjoyed reading and viewing as much as I have enjoyed building. Be sure to keep an eye out for this car in the future because you haven't seen the last of me

Perfect, I like the combination and as well as a revived 3rd gen restored. You have the suspension covered, have you thought about a different rear end, I'm considering the Dana44.

Re: There's a New Camaro In Town...
What I can say is that for now, the small cam flat tappet 305 putting around 300 ft/lbs to the wheel and dead hooking 2 second sixty foots has not been able to break it.
If the ring gear shatters/looses teeth once the new motor is in I won't have much of a choice but currently with a girdle cover, 3.73 richmond gears, eaton LSD, welded axle tubes and forged axles if it holds I have no plans for swapping it out. The tiny 7.5" ring gear is the only thing that has me concerned. Everything else in there should be able to tolerate the abuse.

Yeah that gear is the problem. It's a very nice car though, you have any other plans for it?

Looks good man. Your car has come along way. You should copy and paste the pics in your thread so they show full size without having to click a link on each pic.
I don't know how fresh the paint is, but hoping its not that fresh. You should not be waxing yet if its fresh paint.
All in all, look great and good luck with the COTM

And here is the best picture I have of her so far.
This is just after the first wax on the new paint using the turtlewax blackbox kit and installing the lowering kit. The driver side mirror is still missing in this photo (It was painted the wrong shade of black and needs to be re-sprayed):

one word of advice, since this is your "best picture."
if you want better pictures, find a nicer backdrop. in this pic, the car looks good, but there's oil marks on the ground (which always makes it seem as though the car in the photo leaks fluids) plus it just seems like some parking lot somewhere. i would go "out to the lake" or some place a little more scenic. i know its easier said than done - i've been meaning to take my Formula & 5.0 Mustang over to the shipping docks and take some pics for like a year now. that would require recruiting somebody (my wife, perhaps) but then the kids would be there wanting to get involved...
anyway, just a suggestion.

I got them for $309 shipped when they were 65% off. No they aren't coilovers.

Re: There's a New Camaro In Town...
Well I took a shot at the wheels yesterday. The back ones have had the triangle sections filled in with black. I love these wheels to death, but the more I did to my car, the more out of place they looked. They looked too "plain" being 100% aluminum with chrome centercaps and chrome lugnuts. They needed a certain "Edge" to flow well with the rest of the car.
This is NOT a final picture. Anywhere you see black paint that sloppily overlaps the edges will be wet sanded uniform in a few hours once it dries. I used a paintbrush for touch-up to try and get the edges as clean as possible and took this photo literally 5 minutes later. I'm going to pull the front wheels off in a couple hours and do those.
I think the back wheels look ridiculously good against the red brake drums. All I need now is to order the black centercaps.
Ron, what do you think?

Can't say I've ever had it bottom out. The old setup would always hit the bumpstops when going over speedbumps. Then again, what can you expect from 170k mile springs with 4 blown shocks/struts? And the car STILL handled like a beast even with those!

I think its time to start focusing on the engine bay! Outside is looking good. There is some cool options to use instead of that fake braided loom to cover your hoses. Google Hose Candy

Personally I'm happy with the stainless sleeves.

I really like the subtle black touches too the wheels you did. Also I think blacking out the motor like you did would really look better than all the stainless covers. I'm not a fan of polished and chrome parts under the hood. Just my $.02

I'll try and remember to get a photo of the updated bay tomorrow. The only thing that sucks is the firewall is still white. I won't be able to bedline it properly until the motor is out of the car (When the 334 is built).

Looks nice, but IMHO would be totally pointless. Yeah all the hoses in the bay with the exception of the fuel lines are just sleeved in braided stainless, but that's what the hose candy is. I'd be going to the trouble of pulling the upper radiator and god forbid the heatercore hose just to swap from one type of sleeve to another.

Personally I'm happy with the way the hoses look otherwise. That heatercore hose is a nightmare to tangle with. If you look in the engine photos you'll see where I had to employ one of those springs that go over the hose to keep it from kinking at the manifold.

Wheels are done.
I have to say honestly I impressed myself with this one. They turned out great.
These pictures were taken just before I washed the car (I know, I'm doing things bas-ackwards ).

Here's the bedlined engine bay.
I'm going to pick up another can of the stuff and do the area behind the wiper motor and try to at least get the top edge of the firewall done.
The engine needs to be cleaned and the core support buffed out so it might appear to have lost It's shine.
I think I am going to try some black braided sleeve over the upper radiator hose. All the other ones kind of mellow in nicely but the radiator hose is fat and just stands out.

It looks much better with the black underhood than the white. I just noticed your SLP runners... SEXY! I wanted to run those powdered gloss black like yours. PROPS!

When we replaced the engine back in 08, I port matched the Plenum to the Siamese. When I had the whole intake apart back in the spring however, I decided to take it a step further in anticipation of the 334 which will be spun to at least 6200rpm:
BTW, that's not powdercoating on the intake. Everything including the stripes was done in my backyard with VHT epoxy paint/ceramic engine clear and baked in the oven at 250F

Looks good! Are you going to do any contrasting stripes or anything?

Re: There's a New Camaro In Town...
Guys, I did the first cell phone photoshoot of the car to try and really showcase the work that has been put into it thus far.
These are most certainly not DSLR quality and they were not shot in an ideal location (Work parking lot again), but for a 5MP android phone I think they all turned out well. I believe this car takes the best photos when there is overcast so that is how they were shot. #1, it really brings out the depth and richness of the black without being too glossy and overbearing and #2, the semi-gloomy look of an overcast day really compliments the mean look of the car I was going for.
Get ready, here they come (20 total)...
